Documentary on Alumnus Dr. James Orbinski to be Featured at Festival
Triage: Dr. James Orbinski's Humanitarian Dilemma Follows Trent Alumnus’ Journey Back to Somalia and Rwanda
A gripping documentary film following the experiences of Trent alumnus Dr. James Orbinski will be featured at the 15th annual Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, which runs from April 17- 27, 2008, in Toronto.
Triage: Dr. James Orbinski's Humanitarian Dilemma follows Dr. Orbinski’s journey, while writing a book about his experiences, to Somalia and Rwanda, where he confronts his past and the tragedy he faced in choosing who would live and who would die. Facing threats of violence, lack of supplies and worsening corruption by governments who would co-opt even the word "humanitarianism" in support of their destructive agendas, the film demonstrates how Dr. Orbinski chooses decency over callousness, care over cynicism, and life over darkness.
Dr. Orbinski is a founder and past president of Medecins sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). In this role, he accepted the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the organization. Dr. Orbinski was head of mission both in Zaire during the refugee crisis of 1996-97 and in Rwanda during the civil war and genocide in 1994. He was also medical coordinator in Somalia during the 1992-93 famine and civil war. Currently, Dr. Orbinski is the co-founder and chair of the Board of Directors of Dignitas International, a medical humanitarian organization working with communities to dramatically increase access to life-saving treatment and prevention in areas overwhelmed by HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Orbinski graduated from Trent University in 1984 with a degree in Psychology. Trent presented Dr. Orbinski with an honorary degree in 2001.
