Exciting Community Recreation Programs at Trent this Spring

From Boot Camp Fitness to Flatwater Canoeing, Trent has Something to Offer for Everyone

Members of the Trent and Peterborough communities are encouraged to participate in and experience a number of exciting recreational programs offered by Trent University’s Department of Athletics & Recreation this spring.

Highlights of the community programs currently being offered include:

Boot Camp Fitness
This interval style aerobic class involves high intensity moves of cardio-challenging exercises and muscle-awakening drills. The class is offered Wednesday evenings (May 7 to June 25) from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The cost is $43 for Trent students or members, and $57 for non-members (plus GST).

Cardio Dance Fitness
This class provides a great cardiovascular workout and focuses on posture, using dance styles such as Broadway, Hip Hop and Latin. The class is offered Thursday evenings (April 24 to June 26) from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. The cost is $54 for Trent students or members, and $72 for non-members (plus GST).

Yoga for Kids
In this popular class, yoga is adapted for children using storytelling, singing, game play and drawing, while focusing on meditation, breathing, and active poses. The 8-week program is offered in three age groups on Saturday mornings, beginning May 3: Ages 3-5 will run Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m., ages 6-9 will run from 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m., and ages 10-12 will run 11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. The cost for each age group is $60.

ORCKA Flatwater Canoeing
These active and enjoyable courses follow the guidelines of the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association, and are taught by a certified instructor. All equipment is provided. The four-hour Level A course introduces new canoeists to safe canoe handling, steering and basic strokes, and is available in two options: May 10 (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.) or May 11 (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.). The cost for the level A course is $43 (includes GST). The 12-hour Level C course covers all aspects of tandem canoeing, including turns, landings, rescues and changing positions. This course is also offered in two options: Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 pm (May 13 to June 10), or the weekend of May 24 & 25. The cost of the level C course is $119 (includes GST).

Solo Canoeing Workshop
This 2.5-hour non-certification workshop will introduce novice canoeists to the skills of solo canoeing, including positioning, steering, and proper control. The workshop is offered on May 15 from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. or May 25 from 9:30 a.m. – 12 noon). The cost is $33 (includes GST). All equipment is provided.
