Trent Surges into First Place on CBC’s One Million Acts of Green

December 3, 2008

Within four days of launching its group on CBC TV’s One Million Acts of Green, Trent University has taken over the lead for the largest group in Canada, and has also performed more acts of green than any other group in the nation.

As of December 5, Trent University’s group had surged ahead to become the first group to reach more than 300 members with 325 registered participants. Collectively, Trent’s group has performed 9,712 acts of green which have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by a nation-leading 426,272.65 kg. Trent’s goal of 10,000 acts of green is now well within reach.

“It’s nice to be a leader,” said Shelley Strain, coordinator of Trent’s Office of Sustainability, who together with the Housing Office and Sustainable Trent created the Trent group on December 1. “Trent’s rapid rise to the top reflects our community’s tremendous support of the environment, a quality that truly distinguishes our University at the national level.”

On December 4, TV host George Stroumboulopoulos of CBC’s The Hour, gave a robust shout out to Trent for their quick progress and strong support of the One Million Acts of Green environmental initiative. He showed the photo of Trent’s “coffee cup monster” and used Trent’s success to challenge other universities in the country to sign up and get involved.

One Million Acts of Green is a simple challenge where, by taking one simple, green step at a time, people can track their progress in reducing their collective carbon footprint. To sign up, go to http://green.cbc.ca/, register (step-by step instructions below) and choose from the many suggestions of easy to achieve green acts. These acts need to be something new that you have just started or plan to start soon. Make sure that you become a member of the "Trent University" group so that your efforts are tracked as part of the campus-wide contribution.
