Circle K at Trent Students Team Up to Fight Hunger
In an effort to meet the increasing need for food donations, student volunteers with Circle K Trent organized a community-wide food drive in March that resulted in the collection of more than 1,450 pounds of non-perishable food items.
The club, affiliated with Circle K International and part of Kiwanis International, organized the drive through several neighbourhoods across Peterborough. Flyers were delivered to more than 2,000 homes, asking people to leave donations of non-perishable food items on their doorstep for pickup on March 14.
The food gathered by the dozen volunteers has been donated to the Kawartha Food Share for distribution to families in need.
Student organizer David Patterson of Circle K Trent was impressed by the strong level of support throughout the community. “We want to thank all those who participated in the event, especially Staples on Chemong Road who sponsored the event and provided us with the promotional flyers.”
Mr. Patterson said that Circle K Trent is already planning to expand the event for March 2010 and will target a larger area of homes and involve an expanded base of volunteers. The success of this food drive earned Circle K Trent recognition from Circle K International who posted news of their good work on their website.
