Andrew Culham and Cameron Munro Row Men’s Pair to Henley Gold

HenleyAt the 128th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta rowing finals last weekend, Trent University students and Peterborough Rowing Club members Andrew Culham and Cameron Munro captured the gold medal in the 2000-metre under 23 lightweight men’s pair boat race.

In the final 50 metres of the race, three boats battled for the top position with a difference of less than one second between them. Initially trailing in third place, the Trent duo managed to surge ahead of the South Niagara and Ottawa teams in the final strokes of the race to take the gold medal.

Also rowing for the Peterborough Rowing Club was Trent University student Owen Kane who raced in the single category and placed second to a St. Catharines’ sculler. In addition, the lightweight women’s four, including Trent students Hannah Lewis and Nicola Bendle placed third overall in their category.

The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta settled in St. Catharines in 1903. Over 150 rowing clubs come together each summer to compete for the prestigious Henley Gold.

Trent University will host its 40th annual Head of the Trent rowing regatta and Alumni Homecoming from October 1 to 3, 2010. The Head of the Trent is North America’s biggest single day head race regatta. Over a thousand athletes from more than 50 universities and clubs nationally and internationally travel to Peterborough to compete.
