New dedicated campus opens for 2010/11 academic year

Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Ca To introduce new and returning students to the brand new Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus, a Campus Fair was held on September 7 and September 8, 2010. Hosted by the new Trent in Oshawa Student Association (TOSA), the fair offered the 800+ students and 100+ staff and faculty of Trent University Oshawa their first opportunity to tour the new modern campus. Trent University president and vice-chancellor Dr. Steven E. Franklin and other special guests were also in attendance.

Commenting on the event, Nicole MacDonald, president of TOSA, said, “We wanted to demonstrate to our students at Campus Fair that we are also members of a larger community, as the Trent in Oshawa Student Association (TOSA) is dedicated to developing strong relationships with our neighbours.“

On September 7 all first year or new students were invited to attend a day filled of fun activities and seminars. “The events on September 7 allowed new students to have the chance to meet their fellow classmates and tour their new school while providing the opportunity to meet with some of their future professors and the president of Trent University,” said Melissa Bonada, vice president, Campus Life of TOSA. New students also had the chance to participate in Trent Reads and academic integrity seminars.

The September 8 event was open to all Trent University Oshawa students including new students and parents. TOSA invited students to meet fellow students and learn about the student services available at the new Thornton Road campus. Representatives from ACL Student Benefits, the Civic Center, Durham Region Transit, Disability Services and many more were in attendance to answer questions from students.

“Students will also have an opportunity to partake in a few monumental firsts at the new location, such as bringing their books to be sold in the new Tuck Shop, a first for Trent in Oshawa,” said Sarah Mappin, VP Internal of TOSA.

Thanks to a team of volunteers and student leaders, including the Trent University Oshawa Peer Mentors and TOSA Board of Directors, the inaugural Campus Fair at the new Thornton Road Campus was a huge success.

“The Fair was a great opportunity for students to provide feedback about the new campus, which was overwhelmingly positive,” said Ms. MacDonald. “The new campus surpassed my already high expectations. We are all so excited to begin the school year on our beautiful new campus.”

Building on a 35-year history of granting degrees in the Durham Region, the new Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus is a hub for learning and innovation. At the dedicated new campus, a tradition of strong academic programming in a variety of disciplines and dedicated student support is complemented by contemporary and modern facilities. A grand opening, featuring public tours and lecture, is scheduled for October 18, 2010.
