Trent University views freedom of expression and the free exchange of ideas as pillars of our academic mission – and a functioning democratic society. Peaceful, non-violent protest, free from hate speech, is a key element of these closely-held values.

The University hopes for a peaceful and mutually-agreeable resolution to the tragic and evolving conflict in the Middle East. Members of the Trent University community have different views of the ongoing conflict. As a university, Trent is committed to freedom of expression, free speech, and inquiry, and their right to uphold and defend their own perspectives. It aims to be a safe forum for discussions about society’s most difficult issues. These discussions must be free of violence and hate speech. Trent faculty, staff, and students are free to associate with faculty, staff, and students at other universities as they themselves deem appropriate.

The Trent Board of Governors has a fiduciary responsibility to ensure financial stability and return on Trent investments. It is also committed to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles. Trent University’s primary investments are our endowments. They are managed on behalf of the University by external investment managers. Our investment managers are signatories to the UN principles on responsible investing and abide by international treaties and sanctions that Canada has consented to.
