Trent alumna Anita Erskine shares her boundary-breaking journey to influence – from Ghana to Peterborough…and now the world
When Anita Erskine ’99 came from Ghana to attend Trent University in a small town in Ontario, Canada, she didn’t know what to expect, but what she was clear on was the future she wanted for herself.
“I wanted to break every boundary in front of me. I wanted to be a global icon. I wanted to be this great person who could teach her own life lessons,” Anita said on a Trent Talks podcast. “Before I came to Trent, I knew I wanted to be something great. For four years at Trent, I learned that it’s not just about knowing that you want to do something great, it’s about working towards it. It’s about getting people to listen. It’s about nurturing your dreams, not just as words, but as a reality, as something for people to believe in.”
Well, this Cultural Studies graduate achieved that and more.
Today, Anita is ranked one of the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Africa, one of the Top 100 Most Inspirational Women in Ghana, and one of the most inspirational Ghanaian public figures. Wearing a number of hats, she is a strategic communications specialist, broadcast journalist, television producer, and host. This has cemented her reputation as one of West Africa’s most versatile communication professionals.
Adding to her list of accolades, Anita joined the Africa Netpreneur Prize Initiative as both host and advisor in 2020, and lends her voice and personality to numerous social impact projects due to her unwavering belief in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals’ mantra of not leaving anyone behind.
