Professional Organizations

Creative Writing
  • Canadian Authors Association- provides professional development and networking for its members. There are 3 levels of membership which provides various perks depending on the level chosen. They also list contests and other resources. 
Journalism
  • Canadian Association of Journalists- Student rates are $20/ year for membership and they offer events, mentorship, discounts, and much more to members. 
  • The Canadian Journalism Foundation- provides fellowships, bursaries, public speaker series, and much for to promote excellence in Journalism.

Contests and Awards

Creative Writing

  • Contests for creative writers- Firefly Creative Writing offers a comprehensive list of contests for Canadian Writers. You can also browse their website for other helpful resources for creative writing.
  • More creative writing contests- The Canadian Authors Association maintains a list of contests and competitions for creative writers.
  • Youth of Canada contest list- a list of contests sorted by area of interest including poetry. 

Journalism

  • News Media Canada contests- News Media Canada has a number of awards programs to honour outstanding editorial content and advertising in Canadian daily and community newspapers. They also support the National Newspaper Awards for editorial excellence in daily newspapers.
  • John H. McDonald Awards for Excellence in Student Journalism-Awarded by CUP (Canadian University Press). Nominations are open to all student journalists, regardless of CUP member status. Non-members pay $15 for their first submission, and $5 for every subsequent submission. CUP members receive two free submissions per category, and $5 for every submission after. You will be invoiced after the submission period for any additional submissions.
  • Canadian Journalism Awards- This is a list of awards available for Canadian journalists and journalism students.
  • Post Secondary Youth Media Award- Awarded by Amnesty International each year for text, audio, video or mixed media stories by post-secondary school students in Canada about a human rights issue. It must be published or broadcast by a media outlet associated with a post-secondary institution.  Submissions are usually due in the summer of each year.
