An innovative joint program preparing new and experienced nursing professionals for emerging disciplines in healthcare
Current Canadian health care is undergoing reform and transformation. A new generation of nursing professionals is required to lead the way. Enter the new Trent University-Ontario Tech University Master of Nursing (MScN) in Professional Practice Leadership.
This innovative, professional online degree, is designed to prepare graduates to be professional practice leaders who will ensure and implement expert practice, facilitate professional development, and provide leadership within our dynamic health care system.
Degree
Graduates of the program will be granted an MScN from Trent University in collaboration with Ontario Tech University, or an MScN from Ontario Tech University in collaboration with Trent University, depending on where they are enrolled.
Program Features/Highlights

- Emphasizes all aspects of professional practice leadership including a full course on emerging subject of healthcare informatics, contributing greatly to the future career success of graduates
- Mentorship, interdisciplinary and experiential learning opportunities through research, project and class assignments, as well as collaborations with partners and health care institutions including Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Durham Public Health, Ontario Shores, and more
- Open to applicants with a Bachelor or Science in Nursing, or diploma-prepared nurses with considerable experience in health care
Program Options
- Master of Science in Nursing (Professional Practice Leadership) degree
- Full time or Part-time studies
- 24 months of full-time study or 48 months of part time study, to complete
- Spring semester intake: Students begin their program with a one-week on-campus residency in May or June
- Thesis-based option (33 credits)
- The thesis stream is for students who would like to engage in and learn more about research, as well as students with academic career aspirations (e.g. teaching, pursuing further graduate education)
- Project-based options (33 credits)
- Project stream students will develop projects with real-world impact supported by the identification of an onsite mentor who will assist with project guidance

Admission Requirements
Applicants with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree:
- Must have a minimum GPA of B (73%) or equivalent in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years (last ten full credits)
- Must be registered in good standing with the licensing body in the province in which you work
- International students who hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited university, with a minimum GPA of B (73%) or equivalent in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years and who are registered or authorized to practice in your home country will be considered for admission.
Applicants with RN designation and experience:
- Must be a registered nurse with 10 or more years of experience
- Must be registered in good standing with the licensing body in the province in which you work
- Will be considered on a case-by-case basis
- May be required to successfully complete additional courses prior to beginning the MScN
Required Documents
Transcripts
Post-secondary transcripts and graduation certificates (where applicable) of all previous undergraduate and graduate work are required. This includes transcripts for courses taken on a Letter of Permission, for transfer credit, or on an exchange program.Transcripts must show all course work completed and grades received. If applicable, evidence of degree completion is required.
Please note: Transcripts are NOT required to be official and final when applying to the School of Graduate Studies. Official transcripts are ONLY required to be submitted if an applicant receives an offer of admission.
Previous or current Trent University students do not need to submit a transcript for degree and course work completed at Trent University. Transcripts must be submitted for any course work completed at another institution – i.e., study abroad, letter of permission, transfer credit.
Proof of English Language Proficiency
Proficiency in English usage, both written and oral, is essential to pursue graduate studies at Trent University. It is required for applicants to demonstrate an adequate level of English proficiency, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. Applicants who completed two or more years of post-secondary education at a university in Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the USA are exempt from this requirement. If you have completed two or more years of post-secondary education at a university where the primary language of instruction is English, the School of Graduate Studies is prepared to consider alternate proof of English language proficiency.

Plan of Study
Applicants should provide a plan of study indicating a research interest that they would like to pursue. Typically the plan of study is 1-2 pages, outlining applicant's objectives in the Master of Science in Nursing program.
A Writing Sample
Submit a sample of your writing of about 20 pages or less. Writing samples preferred format is PDF. Hard copies will not be accepted. Good choices for writing samples include: an undergraduate essay, lab report, research report, journal article, a chapter from a masters thesis, or a published article.
Two Letters of Reference
Academic references are preferred; however, professional references will be accepted. Links for your referees to submit an online reference will be sent directly to the referees you have provided on your application. We recommend you contact your referees prior to submitting an application to confirm their availability and contact information. If your referee does not receive the link, you can suggest that your referee check their junk email folder and email setting. The email may have unintentionally been blocked by their email server.
