Program Possibilites
Specialize your studies in Mathematics with a focus on a specific field within your degree
-
Mathematical Finance
Focus your Mathematics degree on the application of mathematical methods to solve financial problems. This specialization will allow you to strengthen your mathematical modelling, data analysis, and computational skills using statistics, linear programming, and stochastic processes. In particular, you will learn how best to apply these techniques to finance, investment strategy, and market models.
-
Statistics
With a specialization in Statistics, Mathematics students learn to incorporate pure math, big data, and computing to uncover insight in numbers. Pave the way for a future career in a variety of industries, from medicine and communications to marketing and technology, with statistics playing a big role in strategic planning and decision-making.
Add an Option to your Mathematics degree to explore an additional area of interest
-
Education
Learn to teach a wide variety of curricula and subjects – an important skill for all elementary and intermediate school teachers. If you’re planning on pursuing your B.Ed., this option provides you with a range of education-relevant courses in math, sciences, the arts, and more.
-
Leadership
What does it mean to be a leader? How does one learn to lead? In this option you will learn all about the importance of building relationships and directing people to work together to achieve common goals and objectives. With opportunities to learn from Trent University’s Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership, and take courses from across disciplines, you will develop comprehensive perspectives on leadership and earn a formal designation that signals your leadership capacity to future employers.
-
Global Power & Politics
The most urgent political problems of our time pose fundamental moral problems that require not only goodwill and commitment, but a deep understanding of the mechanisms of global power and politics. This option is designed to enable you to develop a critical understanding of the formal, informal, visible and hidden structures of power in the global age and the mechanisms that propel global power and politics.
Career experience while you learn
Every Mathematics student has a guaranteed route to paid, credited experience before they graduate.
Research Opportunities
- Work with mathematical and statistical software such as MATLAB, R and Sage Math in Trent’s Math Resource Room.
- Deepen your areas of expertise by leading a research project supervised by one of your professors, examining topics like graph theory, infectious disease modelling and time series analysis.
- Pursue a summer research fellowship and partner with leading professors on real-world topics such as the statistical modelling of air pollution and mathematical biology
- Complete a community-based research project with an external organization, applying mathematical skills to solve real-world challenges.
Field Schools and Hands-On Courses
- Courses cover a variety of areas such as linear and abstract algebra, analysis, computer-oriented mathematics, differential equations, discrete mathematics, the history of mathematics, mathematical logic, measure and integration, topology, mathematical and applied statistics, time series analysis and stochastic processes.
Study Abroad
- Take your Trent education global. Spend a semester or year studying at one of Trent’s international partner universities, participate in a summer field course, or gain international experience through a placement or internship.
- With opportunities in more than 35 countries, you can broaden your academic perspective, experience new cultures, and build skills that prepare you for a global career.
Internships
- Apply your mathematical knowledge in a professional setting through the Integrated Internship course.
Career Paths
- Industry Researcher
- Teacher
- Account Executive
