The Trent Advantage

Put chemistry into practice with access to advanced instrumentation, research-grade laboratories, and opportunities to lead your own research as an undergraduate in a Canadian Society for Chemistry-accredited program.

Prepare to turn your curiosity into solutions for real-world challenges. Discover how chemistry shapes medicines, materials, technology, and the environment. At Trent, you will take chemistry beyond the textbook through hands-on learning in research-grade labs, advanced scientific equipment, and opportunities to conduct your own research alongside renowned scientists and professors.

  • Gain up to 16 months of paid work experience through the co-op stream, with opportunities in laboratory analysis, environmental chemistry, pharmaceutical science, and more.
  • Benefit from small class sizes that open doors to big opportunities to connect with professors and contribute to real-world research.
  • Build your network and resumé as a member of the Trent Chemistry Undergraduate Society (CHUGS), providing spaces and opportunities for connection and mentorship with fellow STEM students.

Accelerated Masters

Fast-track your education, by earning your M.Sc. in Environmental & Life Sciences in only 12-16 months after graduating from your honours B.Sc.

Program Possibilites

Add an Option to your Chemistry degree to explore an additional area of interest

  • Pre-Medical Studies

Medicine, dentistry, veterinary and pharmacy – just a few professional programs that require individuals to have a well-rounded background in the physical sciences and life sciences, as well as the social sciences and humanities. This option will help prepare you for a future in a medical profession and will give you a significant advantage when it comes time to prep for examinations like the MCAT or DAT.

  • Climate Communication

Leveraging Trent’s academic and research strengths in arts-based and environmental education, the Option in Climate Communication blends courses across disciplines to teach you a new storytelling approach that examines how to better understand media's effect on audiences’ morals, values, and behaviours. Equipped with this knowledge, this new offering at Trent University aims to use more effective climate change communications and environmental storytelling to foster a more sustainable and equitable world where our collective well-being is at the heart.

  • Health & Medical Humanities

Learn about arts-based approaches to health, what it takes to make good ethical decisions in a medical context, and how the arts influence and are influenced by cultural views on health and wellness. This option encourages students to make connections between how we imagine health, illness, and disabilities and our lived experiences of them. Complete this option and be prepared for a wide range of health-related and caring professions in public health, bioethics, arts-based therapies, pharmaceutical sales, medical insurance, health communication, health administration, and health law.

Career experience while you learn

Every Chemistry student has a guaranteed route to paid, credited experience before they graduate.

Paid Co-op Available

  • Choose the five-year co-op stream and graduate with paid work experience completing three 12–16-week work terms in the summer of year three and fall and winter of year four.

Research Opportunities

  • Conduct independent experimental research under the supervision of a Chemistry faculty member, culminating in seminars and a written thesis.
  • Present your research through Trent’s 3-Minute Paper Competition and the Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference.

Field Schools and Hands-On Courses

  • Build practical laboratory skills from first year in three-hour weekly labs in small sections of 30–40 students, performing experiments, maintaining a lab notebook, and completing lab reports based on experimental work.

Study Abroad

  • Take your Trent education global. Spend a semester or year studying at one of Trent’s international partner universities, participate in a summer field course, or gain international experience through a placement or internship.
  • With opportunities in more than 35 countries, you can broaden your academic perspective, experience new cultures, and build skills that prepare you for a global career.

Internships

  • Gain professional workplace experience by working within a business or organization on a paid internship, building career-ready skills, making industry connections, and exploring potential career paths.
  • Internships complement chemistry career-focused experience in laboratory analysis, research and development, environmental chemistry, quality control and process monitoring, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical science.
