The Trent Advantage
Choose from two distinct Artificial Intelligence degrees: Canada’s first B.A. in AI, exploring the human and societal dimensions of artificial intelligence, or a B.Sc. focused on the science and technology behind AI, with paid co-op and research opportunities.
Prepare for the future with a flexible AI degree that connects emerging technology with its growing influence across industries and society. Whether you choose the B.A. or B.Sc., you’ll learn across both pathways while exploring how AI is transforming finance, communication, business, education and social media. Build practical experience through AI labs, capstone projects and research alongside expert faculty.
- Choose the B.Sc. to build AI systems through programming, mathematics, machine learning, algorithms, data science and statistics.
- Choose Canada’s first B.A. in AI to combine programming and analytics with AI ethics, philosophy, governance, communication and user experience.
- Explore AI from multiple perspectives, learning how intelligent systems are developed, and how they affect people, organizations, and society.
- Gain hands-on experience through AI labs, capstone projects and research practicums tailored to your career interests.
Program Possibilites
Add an Option to your Artificial Intelligence degree to explore an additional area of interest
-
Digital Humanities
Electronic media has become an integral part of how we view and explore the world. Through this new option you will bring a human-centred perspective to the innovations that continue to transform our shared digital landscape.
Working alongside Trent’s world-renowned faculty, including Canada Research Chairs, you will gain a deeper understanding of how digital tools are applied to solve research problems, and how research within the humanities impacts developments in the digital world.
-
Leadership
What does it mean to be a leader? How does one learn to lead? In this option you will learn all about the importance of building relationships and directing people to work together to achieve common goals and objectives. With opportunities to learn from Trent University’s Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership, and take courses from across disciplines, you will develop comprehensive perspectives on leadership and earn a formal designation that signals your leadership capacity to future employers.
-
Applied Ethics
With courses grounded in critical thinking, ethical theory, and applied ethics, this option is ideal if you are interested in everything from advocacy and public policy issues to working in the fields of medicine, law, environmental resource management, business, and computing.
Career experience while you learn
Every Artificial Intelligence student has a guaranteed route to paid, credited experience before they graduate.
Paid Co-op Available
- Choose the five-year co-op stream and graduate with paid work experience completing three 12–16-week work terms in the summer of year three and fall and winter of year four.
- Build in-demand skills and professional experience in machine learning, data science, software development and research with organizations such as Amazon, Google, GM, RB and Parks Canada.
Research Opportunities
- Build strong foundations in programming, algorithms, design, and AI ethics before expanding into areas such as computation, statistics, cognition, and philosophy.
- Work alongside leading faculty on active AI research in explainable AI, cybersecurity, large language models, deep learning and natural language processing through a research practicum.
- Access the AI Exploration Lab, using high-performance workstations for machine learning, LLMs and large-scale data analysis.
Field Schools and Hands-On Courses
- Put AI into practice through labs, workshops and capstone projects, designing AI-driven systems in the B.Sc. or tackling AI ethics with community partners in the B.A.
- Explore state-of-the-art AI tools and platforms and their applications across finance, communication, social media, business, management and education.
