Erick is an Associate Professor of Criminology in the Department of Sociology at Trent University. His research largely focuses on police use of force, police oversight, and police/criminal justice system accountability. His broader research interests include corrections, criminal justice policy and reform, comparative criminal justice, race and the criminal justice system, dark tourism, performance-enhancing substance use, and rural crime. Erick’s published research has explored issues concerning police use of force and its impact on Indigenous and Black community members, police body-worn cameras, police use of conducted energy weapons, and police oversight and accountability structures in Canada. His recent work on policing includes two books: Policing the Police: International Perspectives on Police Oversight (2026), and Police Body-Worn Cameras: Media and the New Discourse of Police Reform (2026; co-authored with Christopher Schneider). Erick’s work has been featured in the Globe and Mail, CBC, and USA Today. He often comments in media on topics relating to policing, accountability, and issues in the criminal justice system. His commentary on these topics has appeared on television, radio, and in print for international, national, provincial, and local outlets.
