How to Comply

  1. Review the Trent University Basic Website Accessibility Guide and perform the necessary updates to your website to conform to the standards
  2. Take all of the Web Accessibility Training Courses and make any necessary updates to your web pages.
  3. Regularly check your website accessibility using a screen reading device and fix issues that arise.
  4. Regularly check your website accessibility using an online automated accessibility checker such as AChecker or WAVE and fix issues that arise.
  5. Review the WCAG 2.0 Checklist, outlining all requirements for Level A, Level AA. Make any necessary updates to your web pages to conform to the standards.
  6. If you plan to post brochures, posters, videos (when working in house or with a third party agency) ensure that you request that the deliverable(s) be an accessible file that conforms to the WCAG 2.0 specifications. This includes PDFs, Word documents, YouTube videos, etc. You can use this text to inform vendors about the level requirements that they must meet:
    • As a response to the release of provincial legislation under the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act), Trent University implemented the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.0 Level A international compliance standard for all Trent University website pages. This is in accordance with Section 14 of the Integrated Accessibility Standards. One of the key objectives of the guidelines is to ensure that websites and web content (including Microsoft Office documents and PDFs) are directly accessible to as many people as possible, and capable of being represented in different forms to match different people's sensory, physical and cognitive abilities.
      Compliance Requirements
Website accessibility falls within the information and communications standard of AODA. Section 14 states: “Designated public sector organizations and large organizations shall make their internet websites and web content conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, initially at Level A by January 1, 2014 and increasing to Level AA by January 1, 2021.” All web and web content that is uploaded to the Trent University website (including Microsoft Office document, PDFs, videos, etc.) must meet these guidelines.
Please visit the Trent University Website Content Accessibility website for a list of resources.
  7. Email webrequest@trentu.ca with any questions about creating accessible web content that is not described on this website.
