Workshop on Data Security and Encryption
Dear Faculty Members,
Much progress has been made in the last month regarding increasing the security and encryption of research data at Trent University with many faculty members reporting success in doing so. Although we have made these strides, we continue to receive feedback from our faculty about this topic. The feedback centres around the following themes;
- Faculty members are unsure of the process to encrypt files, folders, multiple folders or their whole drive.
- Faculty members have expressed their desire in gaining more help from I.T. on the topic.
- Faculty members have expressed fear about losing their security key once they have encrypted their data. If a key is lost, it is impossible to retrieve any of the encrypted information.
Following consideration and consultation, the Trent University I.T. team will be offering a one hour Data Encryption Workshop that will be available from 1pm to 2pm on Monday November 19th in BL210 and from Wednesday November 21st to Friday November 23rd in BL210. Faculty members are encouraged to attend any day of the workshop that works best within their schedule. No RSVP is necessary. This workshop will give faculty members the opportunity to do walkthroughs and demonstrations, and also allow anyone who brings a device with them to be assisted. The materials that will be used at the workshop are available at:

Also, during the workshops, faculty members will be given instructions on how to save their encryption key securely on the myTrent Portal for retrieval. This will ensure that if the key is lost, faculty members will be able to login to their myTrent portal site and retrieve their saved key.
Do not hesitate to contact either of us if you have any questions.
