VHS Support Expiring April 30th, 2015
Dear Faculty and Staff,
IT support for the VHS format in the classroom will officially expire at the end of this academic year, April 30th, 2015. While classrooms with VCRs will be maintained until the end of this academic year, broken VCRs will not be replaced. Our plan is to have all remaining VCRs removed from the classrooms during the summer months.
The expiration of VHS support will not affect DVD support. DVD playback will continue to be available through the house PC.
In response to IT’s VHS support expiration plan, the Library has begun the process of replacing high-use VHS titles with alternate supported formats,. High-use VHS titles identified through current circulation and interlibrary loan reports are being acquired in DVD format where possible. In some cases, high-use VHS titles are already available through the Library’s Criterion-on-Demand license for streaming. All films in all formats owned by the Library can be found in TOPCAT (http://www.trentu.ca/topcat) using a “title browse.”
The remaining high-use VHS titles that are not available in DVD or streaming format may be eligible for transfer to DVD using a third-party service. The Library is pursuing these on a case by case basis.
Questions about the status of specific VHS titles in the Library’s collection should be directed to Elizabeth Wilson (ewilson@trentu.ca).
