Computer Lab Updates
On January 3rd and 4th, the IT department will be updating the computer labs with an updated Windows XP image. This image contains mostly minor software updates and a few bug fixes.
The big change for the new year is a brand new lab printing system based on software called PaperCut. This new system is integrated into the new TrentUCard system, which you have probably already heard of. (If not, you can get more details here: http://www.trentu.ca/trentucard).
Some of the new features in PaperCut include;
1) Automatic printer balancing. Wherever there are multiple printers located at a single printing station, your print job will now come out of the first available printer.
2) Automatic refunds. If your job jams or is canceled, the system will not charge your account for any pages not printed.
3) Duplexing discount. The new system will now only charge $0.10 per sheet of paper (black and white, $0.50 for colour), whether printed single or double sided.
HOW TO PRINT: Lab users need to do nothing new to print to the new system. If you are using iPrint to print to lab printers from your laptop, you will need to remove any PCOUNTER or AIRPRINT printers you may have installed and add the new Lab_BW and Lab_Colour printers on the PaperCut server athttp://papercut.trentu.ca/ipp
HOW TO PAY: Moving to the TrentUCard means that the coin machines will be removed, and the only payment method for printing will be the TrentUCard account. Funds can be added to the TrentUCard account online through the MyAccounts menu in the MyTrent portal, or in person at the Card Office in Blackburn Hall. All print credits from the old system have been transferred to PaperCut.
HOW TO RELEASE JOBS: If you have the new style TrentUCard, you will now be able to walk up to any print release station and tap your card to login. If you do not have the new card yet, you can still log in to the release station using your Trentnet login and password.
We are looking forward to adding additional features to the system, such as the ability to print directly over the web. Stayed tuned for more.
