Advice: “I would told them that it is worth trying, studying abroad is a great experience and Trent is a nice school. Also, it is not a school that is too big, so it could be less scary to come here. And when they come, just have fun and take all the opportunity the school offer.”
QUESTIONS
Why did you decide to study in Canada?
I decided to study in Canada because I wanted to improve my English level. I had the choice between USA and Canada but the beauty of the nature and the idea that Canada was more secure were my most important decision criteria.
Why did you choose Trent University?
As a Communication major at UCO, Trent was my only option to study in an English-speaking school in Canada.
I was first seduced by the campus, and I had the opportunity to speak with a student from my university, that came to Trent the year before me, and she told me that she truly had a great time.
What did you find most challenging about studying abroad?
I would say that one of the most challenging things here was speaking English 24/7, it was really exhausting at first. As the time went by, I think I acquired more confidence, and I am grateful for that.
Another point that I have found challenging was the food, as I had a meal plan, I was obligated to eat on campus a lot. The meal plan being more than 1500CA$ is quite a lot to spend. I started missing vegetables a lot, the only places I found some were Subway, the World Kitchen and the Seasoned Spoon. It was fine but not enough and the World Kitchen had a bad habit of having a meal with too much sauce for me.
The last thing that was hard for me was living in an Annex, I am used to live by myself, and I really like that. Even if my roommates gave me some space, I was irritated by their behaviours and the fact that we had a dirty apartment.
Were you able to travel?
I was not able to travel a lot because I had quite a lot of work, however thanks to Karen I got the opportunity to go to Niagara Falls.
My least favourite destination was Montreal, I went alone during the reading week, and it was not a good experience.
My travel anecdote is that the Niagara Falls group photo was 50CA$, way too expensive so our group photo is a photomontage that was taken around a campfire.
Did you live in residence or off-campus, and how was that experience?
I was living on campus it could have been a better experience.
I do not want to talk about it too much, but the apartment was very dirty, and half of my roommates organized a lot of parties. Among the other roommates one was living downstairs, he was friendly and clean, and the other was just absent a lot.
What is one of your favourite memories from your time abroad?
I would say the most important ones where the moments I shared with other students in clubs and events like the Orientation Week, the TI events or the French Club.
