Nantes Study Abroad Program

The Nantes Study Abroad Program is a single-term experience that takes place in the beautiful city of Nantes, France. Participants attend the program alongside other Trent students and take participation-based French courses in small class sizes, allowing for a more enriched relationship between the students and the professors. Typically, French major or French minor students attend during their third year of studies. The courses are also typically offered between Tuesday and Thursday, giving the students ample time to explore both French and European culture. This program is unique in that students only pay their Trent tuition (minus ancillary fees) and a program fee of $900 in order to participate, leaving it as one of the most budget-friendly study abroad programs that Trent offers. Extra-curricular activities such as helping in a French elementary/secondary school and being assigned a "famille d'accueil" (welcoming family) are also offered in order to further enrich the experience. This program is an amazing opportunity for students to completely immerse themselves in the French language and culture whilst completing their studies.

"Schooling in Nantes versus Trent was quite different – mostly based on the layout of the program. In Nantes, we were a small group that attended all classes together, which made us grow quite close both as a group and with the professors since it was such an intimate setting. It was less work school-wise, but a lot more work in-class when it came to participation, which I wasn’t used to but happy to accept as it forced me to work on my speaking and quick-thinking skills. I enjoyed school in Nantes quite a bit. I must add that the occasional planned outings with the professors (museums, concerts etc.) were a nice way to experience the culture and understand the history of the city – something that you may be hard-pressed to find at Trent." - Mia Werner 2022

"My experience was amazing!! I cannot emphasize it enough. The course load was decent, two days of class, 6 hours a day. We didn’t need to buy any textbooks, the school gave them to us and we just returned them. There were lots of student events, we went to a festival the school put on to welcome students back after COVID-19, they had DJ’s and everything, it was awesome! Our professors also arranged events for us as well, such as some traditional french concerts. We also received free access to 5 museums in Nantes, which we went to with our professors, as well as a pass to Nantes’ oldest theater, le cinématographe. Thé workload was very easy to handle and the professors were also very helpful and understanding; they were always happy to help us." - Chloe Rongits 2022
