Software Development

In this professional postgraduate certificate program, you will explore interdisciplinary topics related to Software Development, including nine different programming languages, data science, statistics, information systems, software design and modelling, web development, as well as professionalism and ethics in the field of software development. 

Complete this program following your undergraduate degree to gain specialized skills and a deeper understanding of software development to get a competitive edge in a career working with this cutting-edge technology. 

Students may also choose to study either in Peterborough at Trent’s historic and natural campus, or in the modern, new learning facilities at the Trent Durham Advanced Learning Centre (ALC) in the heart of downtown Oshawa.  

At both campuses, the University provides a wide range of on-site support services including academic advisors, career supports, library staff, and Trent International to ensure student success. 

University Requirement  

A minimum cumulative average of 60% is required to graduate with a postgraduate certificate.

The certificate program consists of the following 5.0 credits:

  • COIS 2240H: Software Design and Modelling 
  • COIS 2430H: Web Development I: Front-End 
  • COIS 2520H: Professionalism and Ethics in Computing 
  • COIS 3400H: Database Management Systems 
  • COIS-MDST 3820H: History and Impact of Computing 

Admission Requirements 

The postgraduate certificate in Software Development is available to students who hold an undergraduate degree in any major from any accredited university.

International Student Information 

This postgraduate certificate program delivers education and training related to Canadian labour market needs and meets a field of study requirement set by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.  

The program belongs to the CIP code 11.0899 so students completing this certificate are eligible for a postgraduate work permit. 

Graduating from Trent this year? 

As a Trent grad, you qualify for direct admission to our postgraduate certificate programs. To apply and register, just send a confirmation email to admissions@trentu.ca from your Trent University account. We will waive the application fee.  

Students who hold an undergraduate degree from Trent University may have a maximum of 1.0 credit (two 0.5-credit courses) from their degree applied to their postgraduate certificate program. Students entering additional postgraduate certificate programs may count a maximum of 1.0 credit (two 0.5-credit courses) toward the additional postgraduate certificate program.
