Software Engineering Co-op

As the global demand for software skills continues to grow and evolve, this new stand-alone degree program – one of only two Software Engineering programs at Ontario universities to be offered through a Computer Science department – features extensive paid co-op opportunities, providing you with a streamlined pathway to the workforce, and equipping you with the relevant interpersonal and technical skills to succeed.

The program differs from a traditional Bachelor of Engineering credential as it looks at the subject area through a cross-departmental lens. As a result, when you enter the workforce upon graduation, you will be well-trained in specialized Software Engineering skills and knowledge, as well as educated in complementary disciplines, like Computer Science and Information Systems.

Here you will study a range of subjects , including object-oriented programming, algorithms and data structures, systems software, cross platform applications, software architecture and design, software quality, web development, and computer security.

This five-year co-op program offers a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge and emphasizes teamwork and professional development both in and out of the classroom.

Trent's paid co-op is an opportunity for you to gain work-integrated experiential learning that will help you get a head start on your career. The Software Engineering co-op assists graduating students in achieving a competitive edge while generating experience within a wide range of sectors.

Specifically, paid co-op gives you a chance to obtain 12 months of practical experience on the job, develop or enhance technical skills, explore career options, network with a variety of individuals and organizations, learn from mentors, enhance communication and presentation skills, and develop technical writing skills.

Traditionally there are three co-op work terms of paid employment, each four months long, 35 hours/week, giving students the opportunity to manage well-defined special projects at an organization. With the Software Engineering co-op, students are encouraged to combine two work terms back-to-back creating an eight-month opportunity with one employer.

Experiential Learning
  • Benefit from a 12 month paid co-op work term giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in real-world scenarios, while gaining paid career experience and networking with valuable industry contacts, and having the chance to learn and grow with a team on a longer-term scale than many other co-op programs
  • Develop programming and interpersonal skills as you gain hands-on, real-world experience in the third-year internship course or the fourth-year project course
  • Specialize from day one in targeted areas that interest you and build a strong knowledge base of the building blocks of software engineering, together with technical expertise in software design, testing, and quality, and project development and management
  • Join the Computer Science Society for opportunities to network with major tech hubs and compete at national Hackathon events
