Mathematical Finance

Focus your Mathematics degree on the application of mathematical methods to solve financial problems. This specialization will allow you to strengthen your mathematical modelling, data analysis, and computational skills using statistics, linear programming, and stochastic processes. In particular, you will learn how best to apply these techniques to finance, investment strategy, and market models.

Courses

Graduating students who have fulfilled the requirements for a single-major Honours degree in Mathematics may apply for a Specialization in Mathematical Finance, if they have also successfully completed the following 6.5 credits:

  • 5.0 MATH credits consisting of:
    • MATH-PHYS 2150H: Ordinary Differential Equations
    • MATH 2560H: Statistics I: Mathematical Statistics
    • MATH 2570H: Probability II: Intermediate Probability
    • MATH-PHYS 3150H: Partial Differential Equations
    • MATH-PHYS 3160H: Methods of Applied Mathematics
    • MATH-COIS 3350H: Linear Programming
    • MATH 3510H: Mathematical Finance
    • MATH 3560H: Statistics II: Linear Models
    • MATH-ECON 4251H: Advanced Mathematical Methods for Economics
    • MATH 4510H: Mathematical Risk Management
  • 1.5 ECON credits consisting of:
    • ECON 1010H: Introductory Microeconomics
    • ECON 1020H: Introductory Macroeconomics
    • ECON-ADMN 3020H: Financial Economics
  • Note
    • The following courses are recommended: COIS 1020H, MATH 4120H, MATH 4560H, and MATH 4570H.
