Media Studies
Trent’s multidisciplinary Media Studies program helps you understand the culture behind the media we consume, focusing on the impact media has on us all.
This hands-on program features a variety of course options in the arts and sciences, providing opportunities to examine the influence of advertising and ideology, the political economy of media corporations, the foundations of media arts, and the ecological impact of media technologies.
Practical experience is a major component of this degree, with workshop courses in everything from game design and music production to podcasting and photography.
Accelerated Masters
Fast-track your education, by earning your Master’s degree in Cultural Studies in only 12-20 months of graduating from your Honours B.A.
Earn credit for “doing” as well as “thinking,” as you gain hands-on experience fabricating 3D-printed objects, bending circuits, shooting on 16mm film, building VR experiences, and working in our Critical Making Studio.
Trent's paid co-op is an opportunity for you to gain work-integrated experiential learning that will help you get a head start on your career. The Media Studies co-op assists graduating students in achieving a competitive edge while generating experience within a wide range of sectors.
Specifically, paid co-op gives you a chance to obtain 12 months of practical experience on the job, develop or enhance technical skills, explore career options, network with a variety of individuals and organizations, learn from mentors, enhance communication and presentation skills, and develop technical writing skills.
Traditionally there are three co-op work terms of paid employment, each four months long, 35 hours/week, giving students the opportunity to manage well-defined special projects at an organization. With the Media Studies co-op, students are encouraged to combine two work terms back-to-back creating an eight-month opportunity with one employer.
- Complete 12 months of paid work experience through the four-year co-op stream, which offers you three full-time work terms to work with local news media, marketing agencies, or a variety of other arts, entertainment, business, or culture organizations
- Put your learning into practice through workshops, internships, and community-based research courses, working directly with media professionals from organizations including Artspace, Global TV, Trent Radio, ReFrame Film Festival, and the Royal Academy of Dance
- Build your portfolio of work with media new and old: compose music, code video games, write blogs, or edit a film
- Make use of new technology, such as 3D-printing and virtual reality, in Trent’s Critical Making Studio
