
Master of Education in Educational Studies M.Ed.
Learn how to design and critically analyze educational environments that encourage rigour, creativity and care. This program equips graduates to shape the future.
You will explore teaching and learning contexts within and beyond the classroom, as you gain the leadership skills needed to enact change. This personalized approach will support you in your educational learning goals, whether you work in education or industry, community or public service. The part-time version of this program was designed especially for working professionals, and encourages you to chart your own course of study and follow it at your own pace.
Based in the School of Education, you will have the flexibility to pursue specific areas of interest and take some courses in other departments to broaden your experience. You will explore the significance of power, belonging, motivation, culture and more. Faculty members with expertise in a range of specialties will help you discover how you can apply your knowledge in your profession and in the community.

Program Options
- Full-time and Part-time studies
- 3 streams to choose from: thesis-based, course-based or research project
- 1-2 years for full-time students to complete, and 2 to 5 years for part-time, based on stream of registration (Thesis, Course, Project)

Admission Requirements
- Honours degree (a four year undergraduate bachelor's degree)
- General degree (3 years) plus domestic B.Ed. also eligible to apply
- Minimum B+ (77%) or equivalent in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years (last ten full credits)
- Appropriate previous education and training, plus feasible proposed course of study and research project
- Applications will also be considered in light of a range of other evidence that may, in some circumstances, mitigate a lower academic average
A GRE test score is not required for admission into this program
Required Documents
Transcripts
Post-secondary transcripts and graduation certificates (where applicable) of all previous undergraduate and graduate work are required. This includes transcripts for courses taken on a Letter of Permission, for transfer credit, or on an exchange program. Transcripts must show all course work completed and grades received. If applicable, evidence of degree completion is required. Transcript must include a grading scale or transcript legend.
Please note: Transcripts are not required to be official and final when applying to the School of Graduate Studies. Official transcripts are only required to be submitted if an applicant receives an offer of admission.
Previous or current Trent University students do not need to submit a transcript for degree and course work completed at Trent University. Transcripts must be submitted for any course work completed at another institution – i.e.) study abroad, letter of permission, transfer credit.
International Applicants: the verification services of an organization such as WES are not required unless requested by the School of Graduate Studies after a review of complete applications.
Two Letters of Reference
Academic references are preferred; however, professional references will be accepted. Links for your referees to submit an online reference will be sent directly to the referees you have provided on your application. We recommend you contact your referees prior to submitting an application to confirm their availability and contact information. If your referee does not receive the link, you can suggest that your referee check their junk email folder and email setting. The email may have unintentionally been blocked by their email server.
Proof of English Language Proficiency
Proficiency in English usage, both written and oral, is essential to pursue graduate studies at Trent University. It Is required for applicants to demonstrate an adequate level of English proficiency, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. Applicants who completed two or more years of post-secondary education at a university in Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the USA are exempt from this requirement. If you have completed two or more years of post-secondary education at a university where the primary language of instruction is English, the School of Graduate Studies is prepared to consider alternate proof of English language proficiency.

Plan of Study or Personal Statement plan of study template | personal statement template
Applicants to the thesis or project stream should provide a plan of study indicating a research interest that they would like to pursue. Typically the plan of study is 1-2 pages, outlining applicant's objectives in the M.Ed. graduate program.
Course-based M.Ed. applicants should provide a personal statement that indicates their motives for applying to the M.Ed, and linking their prior personal and professional experiences with the learning goals that they have for completing the M.Ed. Additionally, course stream applicants may wish to indicate courses of interest and how these courses provoke their interest, the areas of research you are interested in and any additional information to support your application. A Writing Sample
Submit a sample of your writing of about 20 pages or less. Writing samples preferred format is PDF. Hard copies will not be accepted. Good choices for writing samples include: an undergraduate essay, lab report, research report, journal article, a chapter from a thesis, or a published article.
