The Trent Advantage

Explore the art and science of nursing through evidence-based learning, close faculty mentorship, and 1,000+ hours of clinical experience in hospital and community settings.

Beginning in first year, Trent Nursing students integrate theory and practice through lectures, seminars, case studies, simulation labs, online learning, and clinical experiences. As your knowledge grows, you will apply it in hospital and community settings while developing the skills needed for professional nursing practice.

  • Program options include four-year Collaborative Nursing B.Sc.N. program and a 28-month Compressed Nursing B.Sc.N program specifically for those transferring from college or university.
  • Access high-fidelity technology in state-of-the-art simulations labs to practice healthcare scenarios including childbirth, acute illness and chronic disease management.
  • Explore areas of interest in aging, mental health, rural healthcare, Indigenous communities, cultural safety, and gender and women’s health.
  • Participate in regional health conferences, international nursing exchanges, and global health opportunities.
  • Eligible Trent/Fleming School of Nursing students may receive the Ontario Learn and Stay grant, which covers tuition, books and other direct educational costs when they commit to beginning their nursing careers in Eastern Ontario.

Career experience while you learn

Every Nursing student has a guaranteed route to paid, credited experience before they graduate.

Research Opportunities

  • Conduct research through a supervised undergraduate thesis, with opportunities to collect and analyze data and potentially publish your findings.
  • Learn alongside expert nursing researchers exploring rural and Indigenous health, mental health, aging, health equity, critical care, and community health.
  • Take your learning beyond the classroom through community projects, international exchanges, and health conferences where you can present your work and connect with professionals.

Field Schools and Hands-On Courses

  • Gain community nursing experience with public health units, clinics, schools and community organizations, delivering health-promotion initiatives for diverse populations.
  • Build acute-care clinical skills in patient assessment, medication administration, IVs and other procedures through hospital placements in areas such as cardiology and surgery.

Study Abroad

  • Gain international nursing experience through a 12-day second-year placement in remote Central American communities, working alongside local health professionals to provide primary care, health promotion and nursing education.

Placements

  • Gain 1,000+ hours of clinical experience starting in first year, culminating in a 300-hour placement in your fourth year, taking on increasing responsibility alongside an RN.
  • Pursue specialized placements in critical care, rural and remote communities, or international settings, with past opportunities including Attawapiskat, Fort Albany and Moose Factory.

Internships

  • Gain paid professional experience through internships with hospitals and health organizations, building career-ready skills, industry connections, and insight into potential career paths.
  • Put your nursing skills into practice through Trent’s Community Health Outreach Vehicle, working alongside a nurse practitioner to provide care, health education and harm-reduction services in nearby communities.
