Accounting (B.B.A.) (specialization) (co-op available)

Go beyond the fundamentals of business and learn the language of accounting. Take a blend of courses in Financial and Managerial Accounting, Economics, Information Systems, and Tax and Auditing and as you gain a thorough understanding of the various accounting processes, preparing you for a potential future as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).

Courses for Specialization in Accounting

Graduating students who have fulfilled the requirements for a single major Bachelor of Business Administration may add a Specialization in Accounting if they have successfully completed the following 5.5 credits with a minimum grade of 65% in each and an overall average of at least 70%:

  • 3.0 ADMN credits consisting of ADMN 1221H, 3021H, 3121H, 3200H, 3221H, and 3321H
  • 2.5 ADMN credits from ADMN 1620H, 3250H, 3700H, 3710H, 4300H, 4301H, 4302H, 4303H, or 4710H

Link to CPA website. Please note that meeting the requirements for a Specialization in Accounting is not the same as meeting the pre-requisite course requirements for admission into the CPA PEP.  Students pursuing CPA should take all of the courses listed above except for ADMN 3700H.  Even though CPA does not require ADMN 3700H it is recommended for breadth of knowledge.

Course planning

It is important you draft a course plan for your studies at Trent.  By developing a course plan, you ensure you have the required pre-requisite courses to register in the courses you are interested in as well as meet the requirements to graduate.

First year - For those considering a Specialization in Accounting, students should complete ADMN 1000H, ADMN 1221H, ECON 1010H, and ECON 1020H in first year.  If you take ADMN 1000H and 1221H in the fall, you could consider taking one or two of the second year ADMN courses (ie. ADMN 2010H, 2100H, 2220H, 2230H, or 2510H) in the winter term of first year.   This will then leave space in the upper years to timetable the appropriate accounting courses.  It is also suggested you take COIS 1010H and COIS 1620H in first year.

Second year – For those considering a Specialization in Accounting, you should complete ECON 2200H (fall), ADMN 3021H (fall) and ADMN 3200H (winter) of second year. Students should also complete all required ADMN and ECON second year level courses.

Third year – For those considering a Specialization in Accounting, you should complete ADMN 3121H (fall), 3221H (fall) and 3321H (winter) of third year. Over third and fourth year, students should also complete all required ADMN third and fourth year level courses.

Fourth year – Consider applying for the placement course ADMN 4870H (minimum 72% cumulative average required) and secure an experiential learning position with a local agency.
