Trent Alumni Find Success During Municipal Elections in Peterborough and Durham
Trent alumna Diane Therrien ’10 has been elected mayor of Peterborough. The M.A. graduate of the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies was previously elected councillor for Town Ward in 2014. She is the youngest person elected mayor of Peterborough in at least 118 years, and is also only the third woman to hold the position. Ms. Therrien is a former representative on the Trent University Alumni Association council and was a recipient of the Trent University Young Alumni Award.
Ms. Therrien was one of several Trent University alumni running for municipal office in the Trent University communities of Peterborough and Oshawa, home of Trent’s Durham GTA campus. In Whitby, another alumn, Don Mitchell ’69, was re-elected as mayor.
In Peterborough, alumni Brock Grills ‘12, Kim Zippel ‘05, Henry Clarke ‘70, Dave Haake ‘75, Jeff Westlake ‘03, Kemi Akapo ‘04, Jane Davidson ‘68, Dean Pappas ‘84, and Gary Baldwin ‘74 all ran for ward councillor positions. Ms. Zippel, Mr. Clarke, Ms. Akapo, Mr. Pappas and Mr. Baldwin secured council seats. In Oshawa, several Trent alumni ran in races across the region, and Bradley J. Marks ’01 and John Neal ’81 were elected to council.
