Welcome to Trent University
In 1964, Trent was founded by President Tom Symons as a university committed to providing an excellent liberal arts and science undergraduate education in a student-centred environment. Over the years as the number of programs, students, and faculty has grown, Trent still prides itself in challenging its students to become critical thinkers, independent learners, and global citizens.
The single faculty of Arts and Science comprises 26 undergraduate departments and programs, some in traditional disciplines, some interdisciplinary, and some professional, as well as a growing number of graduate programs. First-year undergraduate students are advised to select courses in a wide range of subjects. The wealth of cross-listed courses, joint major options, and interdisciplinary programs means that every student will find – or make – his/her own academic niche.
Trent faculty are committed teachers, many of whom have received provincial and national recognition. Trent faculty are also nationally- and internationally-renowned researchers. They attract excellent graduate students to Trent’s innovative interdisciplinary Master’s and Doctoral programs, and they encourage senior undergraduate students to participate in their research.
Trent University has five colleges for full-time undergraduate students (four of them residential), one college for graduate students, and one college for part-time undergraduate students. All students on the Peterborough campuses are affiliated with one of Trent’s colleges and have the opportunity to get involved in governance, organizations, and events at the college level. Colleges also provide a close-knit and supportive community for students, whether they live in residence or off campus.
For three decades Trent has also offered courses and degree programs in many disciplines through our campus in Oshawa. Trent in Oshawa currently shares premises with Durham College and Ontario University Institute of Technology (UOIT). In September 2010, Trent in Oshawa will be moving into its own new premises.
I invite you to explore the various academic programs available at Trent University, the services provided for our students, and the range of opportunities for study abroad, for community-based education, for student life, and for involvement in sports. We know you will not be disappointed.
I also invite you to visit Trent – in person or virtually through our award-winning tour – and I hope you will become a part of our community as we approach our 50th anniversary in 2014.
