Post a Job: A Step-by-Step Hiring Process

The Trent Career Centre would like to introduce the Career Centre Job Board.  You will now have the ability to edit live postings, including dates and deadlines.  The Career Centre reviews all jobs before posting.


Posting a TWSP/TIP/LWSP Job

Step 1.   Determine how you will fund the position.

Step 2.   Post the job on the Career Centre Job Board.

Step 3.   Receive/ review applications.  Interview.

Step 4.   Hire and arrange payroll.

Step 5.   Orientation and training.

Step 3.  Receive and review applications.  Interview students.

  • Students will contact you by the method you have indicated.
  • You may require criminal record checks of students if they will be in a position of trust (i.e. work with valuable items/cash, are given master keys, work with under-age children, have access to sensitive/personal information).
  • You may also request an incident report check from Campus Security to determine if the student has engaged in any behaviour on campus that may be contrary to the best interests of the university. Campus Security can only comment on incidents reported to them and will not provide any third party information.

Step 4.  Hiring and paying the student    

   

  • All positions must be assigned one of three pay rates: $10.25 per hour, $10.65 or $11.20 depending on the complexity of the position. Total wage packages include 9% costs (4% vacation benefit plus mandatory benefits). Under the OPSEU agreement, students cannot work more than 10 hours per week.
  • Download the Student/Casual Employment Information and TD1 forms from the HR/Payroll web site. Complete the forms with the student.  Send completed forms and a void check from the student to Payroll. Time sheets will be mailed to you.  Please ensure that students submit their time sheets on a regular basis.
  • If hiring an international student, the department is to provide the Contract of Employment to the International Student in order for the student to obtain a Social Insurance Number. Click HERE to download the Contract of Employment.

Step 5. Orientation and Training

  • New!  AODA Requirements - All new student employees are required to receive training in customer service for persons with disabilities. Supervisors/managers are required to ensure that training has occurred PRIOR to the employee start date.  The Student Staff/Leader module for AODA is available at: servicefirst  Student staff will be able to print a certificate at the end of the module as proof of completion.
  • You are responsible for the safety of your student employee. As a minimum, students should review and complete the health and safety checklist on the Employee Health and Safety Orientation Form (HR web site). Send a copy of the completed form (signed by the student employee and the supervisor) to the Risk Management Department.
