Graduate Student Study Carrels

As of September 28, the Graduate Student Private Study Carrels will re-open.

Please note that only 17 of the 30 carrels will be available in order to comply with physical distancing requirements. Those that already have a carrel booked will be able to access their carrel.

We are currently revising the procedure for new carrel bookings. The new process will be outlined on this page in early October. We appreciate your patience while we all work together to safely return to the Library.

The Bata Library has 30 private lockable study carrels located on the 3rd and 4th floors. These carrels are available for use by graduate students who require a quiet workspace close to Library resources. Students with access to office space or those not utilizing the carrel regularly are encouraged to relinquish their carrel in favour of other students.

These carrels are available for a 12-month period from May until April and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis as of May 1st each year. Although new applications are accepted year round, all carrel assignments expire by April 30th each year. Carrels may be renewed annually to a maximum of two (2) renewals.

Students may apply for use of a carrel by completing the application process below (currently unavailable). During the application process the student must acknowledge and agree to the Regulations for Use. Violations of said regulations will result in the loss of carrel privileges. Random carrel inspections are performed by library staff.

There is no direct cost for the use of a carrel, however keys returned after the assigned due date will be subject to a late fee of $5.00 per day up to the maximum of the $100.00 key replacement charge. Once the replacement charge has been applied to the student’s library account, the carrel will be cleared of all materials.

Bata Library also has day-use private carrels available to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis. See our Study Spaces in Bata Library webpage.

Regulations for Use

In order to ensure the security of the library carrels, graduate students are asked to abide by the following:

  • Carrel assignments expire by April 30th each year. Carrels may be renewed annually between April 1st and April 30th to a maximum of two (2) renewals.
  • Carrel keys must be returned to the Library Service desk or renewed online by April 30th each year. Failure to do so will result in a late fee of $5.00 per day up to the maximum of the $100.00 key replacement charge.
  • The carrel is for use by the assigned graduate student and should not be sublet or shared with others. Any damage or defacing of the carrel will be the responsibility of the assigned student.
  • The Library is not responsible for personal property left in the carrels.
  • All Library material left in the carrels must be signed out.
  • The student agrees that random carrel inspections will be performed by library staff.
  • In keeping with library policies designed to reduce waste and damage, please use lidded beverages only, and deposit any waste or recyclables in receptacles.
  • Please report a lost key immediately to Library Services.

Regulations for Use approved by the Librarian Committee September 19, 2013.

Application process

The physical location of each carrel is available for review via accessible map or textual description during the application process. Using the online application form (currently unavailable), select an available carrel. Acknowledge your acceptance of the Regulations for Use and complete your personal information.

Once submitted, you will receive an email with a Grad Carrel Request (RT) tracking number, which Library Services staff will continue to use when contacting you in the future. Once staff have processed your request, you will receive an email advising you that your key is ready for pickup at Bata Library Service desk.

Graduate student should contact the Service Desk if they wish to have their name placed on the Graduate Study Carrel waiting list.
