Marina Morgenshtern: Photovoice as Knowledge Mobilization
Photovoice is often referred to as a tool to expose systemic injustice (Jarldorn, 2019; Wang, 1999). Using a photovoice research project of immigrant experiences to secure professional employment, Dr Morgenshtern will highlight that photovoice can also be used as a knowledge mobilization tool for transformative learning to engage in dialogical process of action and reflection, and develop critical thinking on issues of race, difference, resilience, resistance, inclusion and equity. The following key mechanisms for knowledge mobilization are highlighted: deepening individual reflexion (conscious raising and conscientization); facilitating affirmation, legitimation, and validation through strengthening the processes of mutual exchange (relationality); building a common narrative that exposes structural forces impacting lived realities through critical dialogue (collective identification); and engaging those that hold power in further critical dialogue to unlock the possibilities for activating knowledge.
