Community Awareness - Assist in the prevention and treatment of mental illness, as well as communication and education on mental health issues. Speakers and workshops are available on mental health issues for community and area groups. Newsletters are published and available to the public. Self-support groups meet regularly: Agoraphobia and Panic Disorders; Mood Disorder; Survivors of Suicide; Depression and Manic Depression Caregiver. Resource materials are available in our library on may mental health topics, including suicide.


Community Support Services - A flexible 24 hour support system for individuals who live with a serious mental illness. The program assists an individual to develop the skills and community support necessary to maintain a level of independence. Support is provided to individuals within the community settings, as well as within the individuals' home environment. The program also offers social, recreation, vocational and group support through which clients are provided with opportunities to develop natural community linkages.

Overeaters Anonymous
A 12 step support group for compulsive overeaters. Will deal with any eating disorder including anorexia and bulimia. We meet at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings at St. John's Anglican Church, 99 Brock Street and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, 120 Murray Steet at Water St.

The Peterborough Crisis Pregnancy Centre is a non-profit; non-government funded Christian organization which offers an alternative to abortion. All our services are free and confidential and available without judgment, to all regardless of age, race, religion or marital status. Provide pregnancy testing, educational information on pregnancy, abortion and alternative; maternity clothing, infant and children's clothing to size 3X; childbirth coaches; referral for medical care, prenatal classes, legal assistance and other community resources; information and Post Abortion Counselling and education. A community volunteer-based service using trained volunteers to assist all police and fire services. Provides emotional and practical assistance to victims of crime and/or tragic circumstances; including such incidents as abuse, sexual assault, robbery, fire, suicide attempts, traffic accidents and deaths. Volunteers attend occurrences at the request of a police officer or fire personnel and on the consent of the victim. V.C.A.R.S. can also provide guest speakers to organization in the community.

Provides continuous intake of girls and boys 10-18 years of age struggling with a variety of social and emotional difficulties such as the trauma of physical and sexual abuse, parent/child conflict, family breakdown, death of a significant person, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, suicidal/self-harming behaviour and conflict with the law. Interventions are based on a thorough assessment and may include individual, family or group counselling. Lawyer Referral Service

You may need legal advice, but do not know how to find a lawyer. The Lawyer Referral Service can help. Just call and briefly explain the type of problem you have and where you are calling from. The operator will give you the name of a lawyer in your area who participates in the Service and can deal with your problem, or the number of an appropriate legal service. Then call the lawyer and make an appointment. Be sure to tell the lawyer you have been referred through the Lawyer Referral Service. When you are referred through the Service, you will not be charged for up to one half hour of consultation with the lawyer. After that, the lawyer's regular rates apply.

Peterborough Food Bank

Emergency food assistance given to anyone who expresses the need. We do not in any ways screen people who come to us for help, we know from experience how painful it can be ask for food, and so we keep a casual, non-judgmental attitude. A card system is now in place which monitors the number of visits to the food bank. All staff are volunteers and also pay for all promotional and operational costs. This means that every dollar you contribute buys a dollar's worth of food. We do not seek government funding so we rely on the support of the community to help tackle this problems of poverty.

The Peterborough LETS Exchange is a community barter system dedicated to the free exchange of goods, services, and skills in the Peterborough economy. It is a system based on trust, good will and mutual benefits, and aims to improve the economic, social and environmental health of the Peterborough area. The LETS maintains a system of accounts in an alternate currency called "green dollars." Green dollars are spent and charged by members using the exchange to buy and sell goods, services, and skills from other members.
