Canada Research Chair (Tier II)

Sustainable Agriculture

Trent University invites applications for a Junior (Tier II) NSERC Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the area of Sustainable Agriculture.  Trent University is planning to submit the CRC nomination in October 2010 and the nominee will be notified of the results of the nomination process in the spring of 2011.  The appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate.  The goals of the CRC programme (www.chairs.gc.ca) are to promote leading edge research and the training of highly qualified personnel at universities.  Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. within the previous ten years, have several years of post-doctoral or other work-related experience, have an outstanding record of research in environmental/agricultural sciences, and have demonstrated their project leadership skills and the ability to generate research funding from NSERC and/or other science funding agencies.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active, externally-funded research program, and to participate in graduate and undergraduate studies at Trent.  Trent is seeking candidates with research expertise in one or more of nutrient sustainability and pollution reduction in relation to agricultural activities; impacts of atmospheric pollution and climate change on crops; novel food products, biomaterials and biofuels; heritage crops and conservation of genetic resources; sustainable pest control; use of manures, biosolids and soil amendments; and organic/sustainable farming practices.  As appropriate, the candidate may develop collaborative relationships with the Institute for Watershed Sciences, the Worsfold Water Quality Centre, the Trent Biomaterials Research Program, and/or other groups.

It is expected that the candidate will supervise graduate students and teach in the Environmental and Life Sciences graduate program and possibly in one or more of the undergraduate programs of Environmental and Resource Sciences, Chemistry, Geography, or Biology.  Candidates will be required to submit a proposal to the Canada Foundation for Innovation (www.innovation.ca) at the time of the University’s CRC nomination.

Trent University possesses extensive facilities for field- and laboratory-based research in Sustainable Agriculture, including a large agricultural land area, a comprehensive array of analytical infrastructure, environmental control chambers, and other resources.  Applicants are invited to visit the following web sites for more information: www.trentu.ca/research, www.trentu.ca/ers, www.trentu.ca/els.
