Details of the Year One Program Structure
CUST 6100 (detail)
CUST 6100 is designed to help students, directly and indirectly, with the main work of Year One, which is a reading program designed to serve as the basis for the CUST 6125 Comprehensive Examination. Thus, CUST 6100 and CUST 6125 are closely related. The PhD Program Committee approves the Year One course each year.
The aim is to encourage comprehension in breadth, but also, selectively, in some depth. There is no major writing required for CUST 6100, in order to permit students to focus on the reading program.
The material on CUST is also the Examinable List for that year. There is no Supplementary List as in previous years.

CUST 6110H (detail)
CUST 6110H is an integral part of the Year One program. It is taught over twelve weeks, normally the last six weeks of Fall Term and the first six weeks of Winter Term, each segment normally taught by a different faculty member.
The aim of the course is to supplement the broad survey of theory in CUST 6100 with workshops on specific topics in research. The materials in CUST 6110H are not examined in the Comprehensive Exam, unless they are already on the course list for CUST 6100 that year.
CUST 6125 (detail)
1. The Comprehensive Examination, to be held in the examination period in April or May of Year One, is set by the Examination Committee, which includes the Director and two other core faculty members of the PhD Program, including at least one faculty member of the Year One course. The examiners are determined by the Director and approved by the Program.
2. The Examination tests the student’s breadth and depth of familiarity with the canon of texts in the Examinable List.
The Examination has three components:
a. A 4 hour, sit down exam;
b. A take home essay of 30-50 pages prepared over 2 weeks;
c. An oral examination of the essays produced in a. and b. above, normally held within 14 days of completion of the written exam.
