February 14, 2008: 4th Annual WMST Research Day

Gender and Women's Studies Department is hosting its 4th annual Gender and Women's Studies Research Day in conjunction with International Women's Day/Week on Friday, March 14th 2008.  It will be held in the Eaton College SCR from 2pm-5:30pm, with a reception to follow.  We will be announcing the winner of the 2008 Soroptimist Award in WMST.  We will have a series of mini-talks by various faculty members, as well as a session featuring student research. You are invited to come and join in the exploration and celebration of feminism, specifically feminist scholarship at  Trent.  All are welcome.

November 27, 2007: Feminist Legal Issues Symposium

On December 6th, students from Feminist Legal Issues 1 class (WMST/CAST/POST 3962H) present - Gender (In)Justice: A Feminist Legal Issues Symposium. A free event for all.

Please join us on December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada, for an afternoon of critical dialogue on legal issues affecting women in Canada today.  The symposium will open with a performance by celebrated Canadian musician Faith Nolan, and feature spoken word performances by local artists throughout.  Free refreshments will be provided by the Seasoned Spoon Café.  Members of the Trent community and general public are invited to attend this free event.

October 10, 2007: Public Lecture by Dr. Michael Kaufman

Public Lecture - Men, Masculinity & Feminism

Workshop - Men Working to End Sexism

 A Public lecture will be given by Dr. Michael Kaufman, internationally known writer, speaker, and co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign. Michael will speak about "Men, Masculinity, & Feminism" from 11 am to 1 pm, Thursday October 18, in Wenjack Theatre (see poster for details).

Trent and Peterborough men are invited to a workshop with Michael Kaufman called "Men Working to End Sexism" to explore issues of masculinity, maleness, and sexism. Absolutely all men interested in examining their experiences as men and in looking at the role they can play in challenging sexism are encouraged to attend. This workshop will take place at Sadleir House, 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, October 18th, 2007 (See poster for details).

These events are part of the 11th annual YWCA Week Without Violence (between October 14-20th, 2007), a week long series of free events aimed at eradicating violence and envisioning peaceful communities. Sponsored by the Trent Department of Gender and Women's Studies, School of Education, OPIRG, Trent Women's Centre, Department of Sociology, and the YWCA of Peterborough, Victoria, and Haliburton.

The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce that this year's Ryle Lectures will be delivered by Prof. Nancy Fraser, on November 5-8th.

August 7, 2007: Professor Hobbs Honoured with LIFT Award

Five Trent Profs Honoured with Inaugural Provincial Teaching Award

Five Trent University professors – Drs. Deborah Berrill, Ivana Elbl, Margaret Hobbs, David Poole, and Elizabeth Popham – are among the first 100 recipients of the inaugural Leadership in Faculty Teaching (LIFT) Awards, developed by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU) to recognize and encourage teaching excellence at colleges and universities in Ontario.

March 13, 2007: Congratulations to Professor Marg Hobbs!

Department Chair Wins Distinguished Teaching Award

Professor Marg Hobbs, the Chair of Women’s Studies, is one of the two recipients for this year’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Educational Leadership & Innovation in Instruction. This honour is shared with Mary-Jane Pilgrim, of the Information Technology department. The announcement of this award was made public at Senate on March 13th.
