Rosemary Ganley is well-known in Peterborough as the co-founder, with John Ganley, of Jamaican Self Help, a successful international development agency. She, with John, was recently inducted into the Pathway of Fame for 35 years of leadership in the organization.
Rosemary has taught high school English literature for both local school boards and Lakefield College School. In 2004, Rosemary was a Calendar Girl, a major fundraiser for local flood relief. She has served on the national board of Amnesty International Canada, and is active with the Women’s Events Committee of Peterborough, a coalition of 20 women- focused organizations. She was awarded the YWCA Woman of the Year award in 1985 from Margaret Laurence herself, and won the Canada 150 Medal in 1992 for outstanding community service.
After her early retirement from teaching, Rosemary pursued her long- term interest in theology. For five years she was the assistant editor of the award-winning independent newspaper, Catholic New Times, in Toronto and she gave workshops on faith, fundamentalism and feminism at the NGO Forum of the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.
She is interested in the intersection of religion and politics and she has taught feminist theologies in Jamaica and Peterborough at the academic and popular levels.
In her lecture at Trent on November 10, she will speak on “Women and God-Talk: Feminist Theologies Challenge Patriarchy”.
