Recent Trent graduate shares successes and advice for future students

Business Alum Excels Early in Canadian Tech Industry

To say that Dylan Hunt, a recent graduate from the Business Administration program at Trent, is on the fast track to success is an understatement. Shortly after graduation, Mr. Hunt landed a job at cutting edge Canadian e-commerce business, Shopify. After locking down his position as a member of the growing support team at Shopify in 2013, it quickly became clear that this opportunity was merely the ground floor on an elevator to success for Mr. Hunt, who has recently launched his own small business called CareerFeed which is revolutionizing the way Canadians search for jobs in today’s world.

“CareerFeed is a job search engine that pulls in jobs from company websites in real time. It's a fully automated system that brings the most jobs to the most job hunters,” said Mr. Hunt, one the co-founders of the company. “We currently operate in Ottawa and Toronto, and are continuing to expand across Canada. We are looking for students and professionals to try it out and let us know what they think as we continue to expand.”

Much of Mr. Hunt’s success can be attributed to his experience here at Trent University. Looking back over his four years, Mr. Hunt recalls the extracurricular activities that he took part in which offered him an experience working and studying abroad, strong networking skills and confidence in public speaking, all strong assets that helped his resume get recognized.

“I was able to take part in the Justin Chiu internship program after my third year at Trent. This sent me to Hong Kong for three months to work in real estate development in the most compact city in the world,” said Mr. Hunt. “I was also able to spend four months in Japan while I was at Trent, thanks to the amazing study abroad program. Both of these experiences were invaluable during my time at Trent.”

“I would say that Trent being a smaller school is a huge asset. I was able to get to know my professors and TA's on a personal level, and work with them to learn,” says Hunt. One professor in particular stands out for Mr. Hunt, “Dr. Ray Dart was especially welcoming and was a huge asset in getting me involved during my time at Trent. He pushed me to apply to the Trent Business Students Association which was a stepping stone on the path to where I am today.”

When asked to share advice to other new Trent graduates looking for work, Dylan says, “Ensure you cover everything you did at Trent University on your resume and utilize that to stand out when applying to jobs. This will help you get your name out there and get in the door where you’re wanting to work.”
