Earth Day Countdown: Innovative Environmental Research
Follow along as we recognize Earth Day by profiling Trent’s long-standing reputation as a green campus
Earth Day – an international day dedicated to the conservation of our environment. This year, as we lead up to the April 22 event, Trent University will be highlighting innovative research focused on solving the environmental issues we face today, and cutting-edge programs that are educating the world’s future environmental leaders.
Follow along as we recognize Earth Day by profiling Trent’s long-standing reputation as a green campus.
As an institution set on the banks of the Otonabee River, and surrounded by 1,450 acres of land, Trent offers one of the most sought-after locations for environmental research. Learn about some of the most recent cutting-edge research by our faculty, students and alumni:
- When NASA needed a researcher who is studying the impact of global warming on Canada’s North, they came to Trent University’s Dr. Peter Lafleur. The Trent School of the Environment professor, together with his research team, are helping NASA with an important Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment study. The 10-year research program is currently investigating the impacts of environmental change on both Arctic and Boreal terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems.
- As the first-ever Canada research chair in Environmental Geoscience, Trent University’s Dr. Ian Power is working to create practical and innovative applications for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and has plans to involve Trent students along the way.
- Amelia MacDonald, a student at Trent pursuing her master’s in Environmental & Life Sciences, is working with Biology professor Dr. Erica Nol making waves through her research on endangered Red Knot shorebirds in the James Bay region.
- Environmental & Resource Science graduate Ryan Cant ’09 is putting his Trent degree to work, adapting drone technology through his company, EnviroDrone. It may just hold the key to unlocking the vast, mysterious world under our oceans.
These stories represent just a small sample of the amazing environmental research being led by the Trent community. Learn more about cutting-edge research happening at Trent University.
