New Rankings Announced: Trent Named #1 Undergraduate University in Ontario and #2 Undergraduate Research University in Canada
Maclean's Magazine and Re$earch Infosource rankings highlight Trent's commitment to an exceptional learning environment
The rankings are in, and Trent University has been named #1 undergraduate university in Ontario for the sixth consecutive year in the Maclean's University Rankings and has moved up to the #2 undergraduate research university in Canada in the Re$earch Infosource Rankings, both released today.
“These strong rankings are further affirmation of the forward momentum for Trent University in Peterborough and at our Durham Campus in the Greater Toronto Area,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “Trent’s dual strengths of teaching and research provide a winning combination for students, as evidenced in a series of number one rankings from student experience to faculty awards compared with other institutions in the province. Ranking number two in all of Canada for Research shows how Trent consistently punches above its weight for research intensity, where our professors are advancing knowledge and innovation across all disciplines.”
In addition to leading the ranks in the primarily undergraduate category, Maclean’s also ranked Trent number one in its category for Scholarships and Bursaries in Canada and among the top five primarily undergraduate schools for Medical and Science Grants, Total Research Dollars, Awards per Full-time Faculty, and Social Sciences and Humanities Grants. New this year in the Student Satisfaction category, Trent ranked #1 in Ontario for Experiential Learning, #1 in Extracurricular Activities and #1 in Faculty Awards in Ontario. Trent’s student retention rate moved up to 84.5% and was also ranked among the top half of universities nationally for reputation.
In this year’s Re$earch Infosource rankings, along with being ranked the second-top Research University of the year in the undergraduate category, Trent ranked #1 in its category for “publication intensity” and placed #2 for “publication impact” in Canada.

These impressive rankings come on the heels of the recently released Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2016 list of the world’s top 1,000 universities, which placed Trent within the top 3.6% of all universities worldwide, at number 29 nationally, up from number 31 last year.
