In Memoriam

April, we're told, is the cruelest month and Trent was certainly dealt a cruel blow in April of 1999 when we learned of the death of Professor Michael Treadwell. A brilliant scholar, a skilled administrator, a devoted father and husband, and a much-loved member of the University community, Michael's memory will be immortalized on at Trent through a new scholarship founded in his name.

The prestigious new entrance scholarship will take its place with other highly coveted Trent awards such as the Heeney and Champlain scholarships and will be awarded on a renewable basis for a four-year period.

Professor James Neufeld explains the importance of that aspect of the award. "Michael made enormous contributions to the Admissions and Scholarships Committee at Trent and was forever reminding us of the importance of renewability for scholarships. He often told us stories of outstanding students who reluctantly turned down Trent entrance scholarships - despite the fact that were in many cases more valuable than those offered by other universities - because ours were given only in the first year, with vague promises of others to follow. Michael believed that we could hope to attract really top quality students only if we offered renewable scholarships."

The Michael Treadwell Memorial Fund, is now in full swing with the blessing of Michael¹s widow, Florence and his children Julie, Christopher, Clarissa and Aurèlie. The first step of the four step fund-raising process was an appeal to the members of the English Department that resulted in a staggering $40,000.00 response. A letter campaign to members of the University community and its retirees, both faculty and staff, who had particular connections with Michael, was the second step, and responses are beginning to arrive. The third step will be a letter mailed to approximately 500 alumni who were fortunate to have had significant contact with Michael. Because his influence was so broad and so multi-faceted, compiling a comprehensive contact list has been difficult and we hope that this article will serve as a notice to anyone who might inadvertently have been missed. The final phase of the campaign will be implemented in conjunction with Trinity College, at the University of Toronto, where Michael's friends and colleagues will be invited to blend their support with ours.

To date, $68,000 has been pledged over a five-year period - a very healthy portion of the estimated $100,0000.00 goal that the committee has set to ensure the Scholarship¹s financial future. Once the fund is sufficiently established, the Treadwell Scholarship will be awarded once every four years, to an outstanding entry-level student, with the opportunity for renewal in each of four years.

Michael would be so pleased.
