Well, another Head of the Trent has come and gone. Good times, good friends and great memories. As with every Head of the Trent there took place an athletic competition of epic proportions, a battle for which the combatants have trained all year. Of course I'm talking about the Trent Alumni rugby game.

For many, the weekend began Friday night, at the Great Hall with Big Sugar. Many Trent alumni came out to see the band, and to get an early start on the festivities. With the Great Hall shaking from the high impact music of Big Sugar, some of Trent's finest former students decided to congregate outside. It didn't take long for the conversation to turn to rugby, and Sunday's main event. Some of the guys shared their training secrets, and others began comparing the fine form of their physiques. For those of you that were there, and for those of you who know Trent rugby, you'll understand if I don't go into the details. Eventually the evening came to an end, rather appropriately, in song, that even threatened to drown out Big Sugar.

Saturday we all got up early to go to The Office for a greasy breakfast, and to watch Canada play France in the rugby world cup. After the disappointment of Canada's loss, we went back to Scotty's to recharge our batteries, before heading up to campus.

Even the rain couldn't spoil the mood for Trent's illustrious alumni, who had come out to see old friends, share the stories of their lives after Trent, drink the odd refreshment and even to watch the occasional boat race. Head of the Trent is always filled with happiness and excitement but there's also a bit of sadness as well. I guess it's because we know in the back of our minds, the weekend can't last forever. That night the party continued, although some of the rugby alumni decided to make it an early evening, so as to be well rested for the game.

Sunday, game day. This is the event we've waited for all year. This is the moment when all the training and dedication pays off. This is the moment, as athletes, we know we were born for. This is also the moment, right before kick off, when we pray for our joints to hold for one more game, and to tell ourselves that we only have to play 20 minutes, and then we can fake an injury.

Members came from all over to represent Trent's proud rugby tradition. The team consisted of Colin Mathew '91, Garet Hart, Morgan Spencer '92, Jamie Brake '94, Paul Fraser '91, Dave Brown '88, Barry Campbell '73, Dan Murphy '75, Andrew McMaster '95, Kyle Shackelton '95, Jacob Cooks, Scott Campbell '93, Fergal OšHagan, Dan Lavender '95, Kevin OšNeill '80, Dave Weightman '94, Thierry Bazay '95, Jeff Jarvis, Mark Haskins '92, Wayne McFarlane '80, Jamie Banting '95, Mark McLaughlin '85 and Tariq Rafi '86.

The game itself was the clash of titans everyone expected, and while the current team provided some exciting play, they were no match for the years of experience of the Trent Alumni. Colin Mathews and Dan Murphy ('75) provided the scoring in our 15-13 win and afterward the alumni were hosted to a superb bar-b-q by the current team.

I had a great time at Head of the Trent, as I do every year but the weekend always seems to fly by. There's so much going on, and so many people to see, there just isn't enough time. At the end of it all, I'm a little sore, and a little battered, but I can hardly wait for next year.
