Trent's Own Laura Lynch named OCAA Athlete of the Week

Trent University is proud to announce that Laura Lynch is the OCAA Athlete of the Week, as well as the Riley’s-Junction female Athlete of the Week, for the week of February 13th. Laura was spectacular this past week as she averaged 5.3 PPG (32 total points) in Trent’s two match-ups this past week. Laura currently leads the East region in PPG, total points and service aces and sits in second in kills. Ms. Lynch hails from Mallorytown, Ontario and is a fourth year nursing student.

On the men's side, Ian Rettie is the Riley’s-Junction male Athlete of the Week for the week of February 13th. Ian is a member of the men’s volleyball team and put up 29 points (22 kills, 7 blocks) on the final weekend of the OCAA regular season. Mr. Rettie hails from Newmarket, Ontario and is a first year concurrent education student.

 

 

Swim Team Competes at Ontario University Athletic Championships

The Trent University Swim Team competed at the Ontario University Athletic Championships in Sudbury over the weekend. Laura Martin was the team's top member, placing 12th in the 100m breaststroke(1:18.23), 11th in the 200m breast(2:47.13) and 8th in the 50m breast(35.72). Ms. Martin will be heading to Quebec to compete at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships at the end of the month.

 

Ms. Martin also played a key role in helping the team attain a school record setting swim in the 400m (4:58.16) and 200m (2:14.29) medley relays. Other members of the women’s relay team were, Erin Appelman, Shannan Andrews, and Ellen Mihailovich.

 

On the men's side, Anthony Ferri placed 10th in the 50 free(24.76). Mr. Ferri's time was fast enough to qualify him for the Eastern Canadian Championships in Montreal.

 

“The swimmers did a great job in the midst of some very tough competition. The men's team posted all personal best times, and the women really performed at a high level,” said Trent Head Coach Sean Dwyer. The women's team placed 12th and the men's team placed 13th.

Trent Women to Host Volleyball Playoff Game

 

Entering the final weekend of OCAA volleyball action there were match ups and seeds to be decided for the playoffs. On Friday night Trent University dropped an intense game to Algonquin College by a score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-11). This game featured the top two teams in the East Division. Laura Lynch was the leading scorer for Trent with 15points (12 kills, 1 block, 2 aces).

 

On Saturday, Trent clinched a home playoff game by defeating La Cite Collegiate by a score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22). Laura Lynch once again led the way for Trent with 17 points (13 kills, 4 aces).

“I’m very pleased with how our team has performed this season. It would have been nice to defeat Algonquin but we have a home playoff game and a chance to advance to the OCAA championships,” said Head Coach Pete Carter.

 

Trent finishes the season in second place in the OCAA East Division with an 8-5 record. The Trent women will host Mohawk College, Saturday, February 18th at 3pm at the Trent Athletic Complex. The winning team will advance to the OCAA Championship tournament at Humber College February 23-25.

Trent Men Fall Short in Volleyball Playoff Bid

In men’s OCAA volleyball action, Trent University was in a tough spot on Friday night as they were hosting the Algonquin Thunder, the fourth ranked team in the province.

Trent took control of the match early as they won the first set (25-20).

“We came into this game believing we could win. We spread the ball around and had everyone involved,’ said Trent Head Coach Mike Halloran.

Algonquin won the next two sets before Trent would force an exciting fifth set. However, the experienced Algonquin squad prevailed with a 3-2 win (20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12). Leading scorers for Trent were, Ian Rettie with 18 points (14 kills, 4 blocks), Paul Scott with 13 kills, and Corey Leblanc with 13 points (10 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace).

 

On Saturday, Trent had a playoff deciding match with the La Cite Coyotes. Trent jumped out to an early lead with a first set win (25-22) however, La Cite’s Mathieu Gatien proved to be too much for Trent. Gatien had 27 points (24 kills, 1 block, 2 aces) to lead the Coyotes to a 3-1 victory (22-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-16). The Leading scorer for Trent was Paul Scott with 12 points (10 kills, 2 blocks).

Trent finishes the season in fourth place in the OCAA East with a 5-8 record.

Athletes of the Week

Trent University is proud to announce that Sarah Ridgely and Stephen Donald are the the Riley’s-Junction Athletes of the Week for the week of February 6th.

Ms. Ridgely is a a member of the Trent curling team. She has played in every game of the OUA playoffs despite a nagging injury that limited her ability to sweep. Ms. Ridgely hails from Bracebridge, Ontario and is a first year concurrent education student.

 

Mr. Donald is a member of the Trent fencing team and has brought home a silver medal at the OUA East Sectional in the men’s epee in addition to helping the Trent epee team advance to the OUA Championship. Mr. Donald hails from Peterborough, Ontario and is a third year computer science student.

Trent Boat Captures Indoor Championship

The Trent University rowing team competed at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships this past weekend, in Toronto, Ontario. "This was a chance for Trent athletes to test their fitness levels and gage where they're at after a winter of training," said Head Coach Carol Love. The indoor competition takes place on indoor rowing ergometers and features both individual and team competitions. With team events being 1000m with the splits averaged amongst each team members ergometer.

Posting an impressive result was the women's eight team as they won the University 1000m team race against a strong composite boat of Brock, McMaster and Leander. Ashley Holmes a Peterborough native and a member of Peterborough Rowing Club placed 3rd in the women's Sr. B individual 2000m.

Brent Holmes finished 3rd in the men's Sr. B (under 23) individual 2000m race, teammate Ed Rushton finished in 6th place. Scott McCatheon won the Novice Mens individual 100m race, while teammate Todd Copeland finished in 5th place. In the mens eight Trent finished second to McGill. Trent was winning up to 900 meters and was overtaken in the last 100m by McGill.

Trent Skiers Prepare for OUA's

Cantley, PQ- The Trent University nordic ski team competed at the Eastern Canadian Championships in Cantley, Quebec, this past weekend. This race will act as the final tune-up for the team before the OUA Championships on February 18-19, in Sudbury, Ontario. University racers were separated by age groups at this competition.

Rachel Herron finished in 14th place in the junior women's 5km classic(23:22.5). Adrienne Mason finished in 35th place in the senior women's 5km classic (23:17.3), and Gillian Kunza crossed the line in 47th(27:28.3). In the junior women's 10km free Rachel had another strong showing as she finished in 15th place(1:04:36.6). Again competing in the senior division, Adrienne finished the 10km free race in 31st (1:03:56.8), while Gillian finished 42nd(1:14:54.4).

Liam Walke finished in 36th place in the junior men's 10km classic with a time of 49:16.4. In the junior men's 15km free Liam finished in 33rd place(1:51:15.6). "It was a great weekend, complete with great conditions for skiing. Rachel and Adrienne continue to improve their rank against the university field. I was very impressed with our performance this weekend," said Trent Head Coach Kate Boyd.

Trent Alumni and Peterborough native, Stephen Hart was the top University finisher in both the 15km free (1:15:38.9), and the 10km classic (32:51.5). Stephen now ski's for Lakehead University where he is completing a Masters degree in Forestry.

Trent Runners Post Quality Results for First Meet

Saturday, February, 4th, was a perfect day to be enjoying the great indoors at the Toronto Track and Field Center located at York University. In what was Trent's first indoor meet of the year, seven athlete's had good results. Notable among these results was Jutta Merilainen's impressive result in the 3000m race.

Merilainen, an All-Canadian in cross-country won the 3000m as she led her race from start to finish. Jutta crossed the line in a time of 10:50.24. This time was good enough to beat the Canadian championships qualifying time by eight seconds. Following Merilainen was teammate Chantal Gagne, crossing the finish line in third place.

In the men's 3000m Peterborough native Lee Appleby was the top Trent athlete. "He paced himself well, staying behind the leader for the first 13 laps, he challenged on the second last lap but was eventually out kicked by the Guelph athlete," said Head Coach Richard Borek. Lee finished the race in a time of 9:07.72(2nd). Zekarias Habtemichael finished in a time of 9:34.56(3rd).

Other athlete's racing for Trent were Steph Mitchell, Mike Minor and Clark Richards. Steph ran a gutsy 1000m finishing in 3:33.82(8th). Mike and Clark went head to head in a 600m heat and finished with times of 1:28.31(9th) and 1:33.09(10th) respectively.

"Although Trent athletes have been making the weekly commute to Oshawa for indoor training this was the first indoor meet for most of them. It was a chance to dust off the racing spikes and race against a small but distinguished field, or in the case of Merilainen, the clock," added Coach Borek.

Before the race Merilainen was a little unsure of herself stating: "I haven't done a lot of speed work". When asked about her impressive result she said, "I was really surprised, but happy." Trent Track will be back in action at the Hal Brown invitational on February 17.

Trent Fencers Shine in Kingston

Kingston, ON- The Trent University fencing team travelled to Kingston this weekend to compete in the OUA East Sectional Fencing Championships. Trent fencers have to qualify at the East Sectionals in order to compete at the OUA Championships, February 18-19 hosted by Queen's University.

In the team competition, Trent qualified in four of six events, as the men's and women's epee teams and the men's and women's foil teams will advance to the OUA Championships. "I'm pleased with the results from the team competitions. This will give us an opportunity to put up some points at the OUA's," said Head Coach David French.

In the individual competition Trent had twelve fencers qualify for the OUA Championships. Leading the way for Trent was Stephan Donald with a second place finish in the men's epee, and Heather Edgar who also qualified in second place in the women's sabre. "Stephan and Heather had an outstanding weekend. Qualifying as a top seed is always beneficial as it gives you a better draw at the championships,' added Coach French.

Other athletes qualifying for the OUA Championships are Cory Chisolm (men's foil), Thomas Fee (men's epee), Grant Johnstone(men's epee), Mike Mitnik(men's sabre), Shannon Janke(women's foil), Meghan Murrant(women's foil), Alison Pechlof(women's foil), Virginia Portman(women's epee), Olivia Puckrin(women's epee), and Tamar Walsh(women's foil).

Trent Curlers Fall Short

Peterborough, ON- Trent University hosted the OUA Curling Crossover Championships this past weekend at the Peterborough Curling Club. Both the Trent men's and women's teams entered the weekend carrying a 0-3 record from the OUA East Sectionals. The top four teams at this tournament will advance to the OUA Championships.

In the women's draw, Trent began the weekend by dropping a match to the University of Waterloo by a score of 10-6. Trent then defeated the University of Western Ontario by a score of 11-10. "This was an exciting match to watch, it was a real turning point in the tournament for us, it gave us some momentum for our next matches," said Trent Women's Coach David Farnell. In their third game of the weekend, Trent defeated Brock University by a score of 8-3. Trent then defeated the University of Windsor by a score of 9-6. Trent finished the season in 5th place with a 3-4 record. "I'm proud of our team, we entered the weekend needing a miracle, and the ladies almost came through. This is something to build on for next year," added Coach Farnell.

In the men's draw Trent was hoping that the return of skip John Epping would give the team the boost that they needed to advance. John missed the East sectionals due to a conflict in schedules. Trent opened with a narrow loss to Waterloo by a score of 8-5. Trent then dropped their second match to Western by a score of 9-5. In their third match Trent won convincingly by a score of 6-1. Trent also defeated Windsor by a score of 9-5. "We finished 2-2 on the weekend, but we couldn't overcome the 0-3 record we carried from the sectional," said Trent men's coach Steve Whitehill. Trent finished the season in 8th place with a 2-5 record.
