Trent Curlers Compete at OUA Championships

The Trent University men's curling team traveled to Toronto, Saturday, February 19th, to compete in the OUA Curling Championships. Entering the four team round robin, Trent was the third seed based on regular season play. Trent lost the first game to Queen's University (9-5), "It was a very closely curled game, except for the third end when we gave up a three count on four misses. The ice was a little tricky but it was the same for both teams," said Head Coach Steve Whitehill.

In the second game, Trent lost a heartbreaker to the University of Waterloo (7-3), "We played better this game and had Waterloo wired in the third end. We were lying four in the rings and the Waterloo skip was down to his last shot. He threw it wide and heavy, but he ticked on a rock just outside the rings and it went right into the four foot and we couldn't get it out, suddenly an end that looked like we get four or five blows up on a fluke shot," added Whitehill, "We ended up giving up one point in that end. We started to come back again, then in another end when we are drawing for two, our rock falls out, and we only get one instead of two. Well we end up losing this game too as we just did not get any breaks in this game."

In the final game of the round robin, Trent needed a win over Brock, and a Waterloo win over Queen's. "We were having a good game against Brock and had the lead, but Queen's ends up getting 5 in the first end and takes a big lead over Waterloo, thus ending our chance of advancing to the medal round," said Whitehill. Trent ended up tying Brock (4-4), and losing on a coin flip tie breaker. "This was a very successful season for us, we are very proud and look forward to next season for both the men's and women's programs," added Whitehill.

Trent Volleyball Unable to Advance in Playoffs

North Bay, ON- The Trent University women's volleyball team traveled to North Bay, Saturday February 19th, to face Nipissing University in the first round of the OCAA playoffs. Facing the 3rd ranked team in Ontario, Trent got out to an early lead as they took the 1st set by a score of 25-22. However Nipissing bounced back to take the 2nd and 3rd sets. Trent then forced a 5th set with a 4th set win(25-17). In the end Nipissing proved to be to much as they won the contest 3-2 (22-25, 25-16, 25-14, 17-25, 15-10). "The girls played extremely hard against a very good Nipissing squad. They took one of the top ranked teams in Ontario to the limit and came very close to the biggest upset of the playoffs. The women never gave up hope, even after falling behind 2 games to 1, they showed there perseverance in forcing a 5th and deciding game. Unfortunately, we didn't get all the bounces in the 5th game," said Assistant Coach Adam Ruck.

Leading the way for Trent was Laura Lynch with 23 points (17 kills, 2 blocks, 4 aces). While the loss ends Trent's season, the team has a lot to build on, including this year's playoff qualification, and the return of eight of the eleven team members.
