Trent Rugby Receives Tough Loss

The Trent Excalibur Ladies rugby team traveled to Kingston to play the Queens Golden Gaels on Wednesday, September the 24th. Queens defeated Trent by a score of 63-0.

It was a tough loss for the youthful Trent team. "It was a learning experience, the girls played hard, we made Queens work for their points", said coach Craig Harris, "We learned from this game just like we learned from the previous games, and we’re looking for continued improvement throughout the season."

The loss drops Trent to 0-2 on the season. Trent hosts York this Saturday, September 27th. York is 1-1 on the season.

Van RooiJen leads Trent

This past weekend, the Trent Excalibur Rowing team launched their season in London Ontario. Rowing has a proud tradition at Trent and this year’s team did not disappoint.

Leading the way was Brockville Native, Peter Van Rooijen, with gold in the Men’s singles. Mandy Sarkadi and Kaitlin Byrick teamed up to win gold in the lightweight doubles event. Senior Shawn Mcintosh, teamed up with freshman Fraser Berkhout to take home the bronze in the Men’s lightweight double. Also medaling was the women’s 8’s, that brought home yet another bronze medal for the Excalibur.

Head Coach Carol Love was very pleased with the start of the season. "It’s a good start to the season, everyone is training hard, and we’re just trying to build on this momentum every week. The Rowing team will travel to Ottawa this Sunday, September 28th.

Excalibur Soccer

On Sunday September 21st, the Trent Excalibur ladies soccer team hosted the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Ottawa entered the game ranked 6th in the country.

Two late first half goals for Ottawa by Volone May and Alex Perschini put the youthful hosts in a hole at half-time. The Excalibur made some adjustments at half time, and controlled the ball for the better part of the second half. Eventually time ran out on the Excalibur, however, forcing a 2nd half draw against one of the top teams in the country is very encouraging.

With the loss Trent drops to 0-4. Ottawa leads the division with a record of 3-0. Trent’s next game is at Guelph, Sunday September 28th, 1pm.

Excalibur Rugby Edged by Waterloo

When Trent University's Men’s Rugby team hosted the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, in OUA action, it was more than just a regular game on the schedule. The Excalibur’s season came to a sudden halt last season when the Waterloo Warriors upset the favoured host team.

Last year Trent finished the season with a 5-1 record and outscored their opponents by nearly 100 points. As a result The Excalibur earned a birth in the Ontario University Associations Number 1 Division. Trent opened the season with a tough road loss to the defending league champions, McMaster.

With a 6 game schedule, and only 4 teams out of 7 advancing to the playoffs, its easy to see how high the stakes were in this Saturdays game.

Trent came out of the gates with a vengeance, opening up a 13-0 lead, thanks to early Tries by Robert Stone and Chris Godwin, as well as some help from the Right foot of Mike Simmons. Later in the half a lightning quick run by Peterborough native John Stevenson, quickly turned into an Excalibur Try for Josh Connor. Waterloo quickly retaliated with a try of their own, closing the halftime lead to 20-7.

Injuries seemed to slow the Excalibur momentum early in the second half, as the Warriors scored early to close the lead to 20-14. Another quick try for the Warriors put the host school down 21-20. With their starting lineup depleted by injuries the Excalibur could not mount a comeback. "It was a tough loss but the season’s not over", said Excalibur coach Darrell Devine.

Trent Athletics is proud to announce that Freshman Lee Appelby is the Male Athlete of the Week, for the week of September the 15 -21.
