Let's Eat! Seasoned Spoon Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Student co-operative café hosts activities and events for anniversary

With origins in the hallways of Trent University as an Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) working group, the Seasoned Spoon has seen huge growth in 15 years. On March 9, the student run, co-operative café will be celebrating its 15th anniversary with an entire day of workshops, vendors, spoon carving, tours and more, ending the evening with a dinner, panel discussions and other celebrations.

In 2003, the Seasoned Spoon transitioned from an OPIRG working group to a student organization with an established board of directors and a designated space at the Cat’s Ass Pub in Otonabee College. Since then, the café has seen many phases of transition and growth, that has been met with support from students and the University as a whole. Outside organizations have also contributed. All partnerships and support have resulted in many milestones for the café, including a relocation to Champlain College in 2009, the building of a root cellar in 2012, a complete renewal of the eating space in 2015, and kitchen expansions throughout the years.

“It’s incredible to think we have already come this far on our journey as an organization, and it is an inspiring moment in time to pause and look back at everything that has been built along the way,” says Aimee Blyth, general manager of the café. “As the excitement for our anniversary event builds, we look forward to celebrating with all of the students, staff and community members who have been an integral part of realizing the Spoon's mandate over the years as well as planting the seeds for another 15 years of growing a sustainable, just and inclusive food system at Trent University."

The non-profit strives to provide locally grown, affordable food and provides educational initiatives through volunteer opportunities, workshops, speakers and conferences available to both students and community members.
