Trent Rowers Selected for World University Rowing Championship
Excalibur rowers Graham Peeters and Trevor Jones to compete for Team Canada in Poland
Two Trent rowers will be representing the University and competing for Canada on the world stage at the upcoming World University Rowing Championships – Graham Peeters and Trevor Jones were recently selected to represent Team Canada at the September championship in Poland in the men’s double skulls.
“The opportunity for some of our best student athletes to compete internationally is exciting,” said Carol Love, who has mentored and coached both Excalibur Rowers through Rowing Canada's Talent Development Centre (TDC) at Trent, one of seven centres in Canada tasked with identifying and training future high performance athletes. “Graham and Trevor’s nomination to Canada's FISU team demonstrates that Trent students are some of Canada's best. Both are a product of the Row to Podium program that Trent University and the Peterborough Rowing Club hosts, and are proud to be representing Trent and Canada on the world stage.”
The national team honour comes on the heels of a very successful season for Mr. Peeters and Mr. Jones, who rowed their way to a heavyweight men’s doubles gold medal at the 2016 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships. Mr. Peeters added a silver in the heavyweight men’s single at the OUA Championship and earned another silver in the CURA National Championships, hosted in Antigonish, NS in the fall.
“It is a great honour to represent Canada anytime, but for Trevor and I to be able to race in the two man boat is special because we are racing like we did all year for Trent,” Mr. Peeters said, commenting on their national team appointment from Victoria BC, where he is currently training.
The World University Rowing Championships will take place in Poznan, Poland from September 2-4, 2016.
