Reception to follow in the Trend.
Guantanamo's Child, the story of Canadian Omar Khadr, incarcerated by the U.S. military in Guantanano Bay prison, is the subject of Peter Raymont’s most recent documentary. Raymont, an internationally known and decorated director and producer, worked with journalist Michelle Shephard to reconstruct the story of Toronto-born Khadr, from his early life in Canada to his time in Pakistan with his father, and his many years behind bars, subject to harsh interrogation which legal advocates have pointed out amounted to torture. Khadr, only fifteen at the time of his arrest, became the subject of fierce public debate in Canada as the Conservative government refused to secure his return to Canada and civil rights activists fought repeated court battles to secure his citizenship rights. The film covers the unknown story of Khadr’s early life, his time in Guandanamo, and the subsequent efforts to have him released. The film, which includes interviews with Khadr and his lawyer, Dennis Edney, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
