July 7, 2007

Trent Varsity rower Brent Holmes is on his way to Rio de Janeiro to represent Canada in the 2007 Pan-American Games from July 14 - 19.

One of only eight rowers selected to compete for Canada, Mr. Holmes will be rowing in the men’s straight four. A solid performance in the Pan Am Games will be an important step towards Mr. Holmes’ long term goal to compete in the 2008 or 2112 Olympics.

Brent Holmes has been a competitive member of the Trent Varsity rowing team for three years. For the past two years, he has been the president of the Trent University Rowing Club. Last year he earned the Michael Cullen Award for team leadership and this year, and his dedication to training resulted in a National University Rowing Gold Medal in the men’s heavy pairs. Mr. Holmes has been training with the Canadian National Rowing team in Victoria, BC since last February.

Mr. Holmes also coaches rowing for Trent and in 2005 under his leadership the Trent novice men successfully won a bronze medal at the Ontario rowing development regatta.
