Bryan Davies
Chair, Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation
Vice-Chair, Trent University Board of Governors, and Chair, Executive Committee

Mr. Bryan Davies has a varied background in the business, government and academic sectors. Bryan held numerous senior positions in the Government of Ontario, including Deputy Treasurer and Deputy Minister of Economics. He has also served as Vice-President, Administration at the University of Toronto and as Senior Vice-President Regulatory Affairs at the Royal Bank Financial Group. Currently, he is the Chair of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, Vice Chair of the Canadian Securities Transition Office, and serves on the boards of several not-for-profit and corporate organizations. Mr. Davies’ original term of the Board of Governors was from 2008-2011 followed by a re-appointment to the Board in 2011. He has been re-appointed to the position of Vice-Chair for an additional one-year term commencing July 1, 2013.

Gillian Balfour
Chair, Gender & Women’s Studies, and Associate Professor, Sociology Department
Member, Trent University Senate

Dr. Gillian Balfour completed her PhD at the University of Manitoba specializing in feminist criminology and socio-legal theory. Her research focuses on the compounding effects of victimization in the lives of criminalized women. She has most recently edited an international collection of essays on the intersections across victimization, criminalization, and incarceration of women in Canada, United States, and Australia. Her other projects include the impact on sentencing reforms in Canada on the rates of incarceration of Indigenous women, the role of victim impact statements in sexual assault cases. She currently holds a SSHRC grant to compile a social history of segregation and disciplinary practices inside women’s federal prisons. Gillian has been a member of Senate since July 1, 2012.  She is also currently the Academic Colleague to the Council of Ontario Universities.

 

Craig Brunetti
Professor, Biology Department, Trent University


Craig Brunetti is a Professor in the Department of Biology and Director of the Environmental and Life Sciences Graduate Program at Trent University. He teaches courses in introductory biology and microbiology. He earned his B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (1990) and a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences (1997) – both from McMaster University. Following the completion of his Ph.D. he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Madison, Wisconsin and then as a Research Associate at the University of Western Ontario. His area of research expertise is the molecular biology of eukaryotic viruses, in particular, the mechanisms viruses use to circumvent host defenses. Using a previously unexploited group of DNA viruses, the laboratory is hoping to provide greater insight into the function of cellular anti-viral responses. Since coming to Trent University in 2003, he has served on a number of committees including the biosafety committee, departmental curriculum committee, and senate budget committee. Dr. Brunetti sat on the Board of Governors for two terms ending June 30, 2013.

 

Noranne Flower
College Assistant, Champlain College, Trent University

A member of Champlain College, Noranne Flower has been a dedicated employee of Trent University for over twenty-three years. She has earned the respect of colleagues across the university for her support of students, her deep love of the College, and her work to meet the needs of students, faculty and fellow staff. Noranne has been an active representative on various committees including Senate and Health & Safety. Her external interests include a passion for golf, cycling, gardening and animals. She is an active member of the Kawartha Ladies Invitational Golf Committee, and served as a Big Sister of Peterborough. She also actively supports the fundraising initiatives of the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society (LAWS). Her respect of self and others is evidenced daily by those who work with her, and deal with her. Noranne’s term as staff representative to the Board of Governors ran from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013.


Ian Lord
Partner, WeirFoulds LLP
Member, Trent University Board of Governors

Mr. Ian Lord joined WeirFoulds LLP, Barristers and Solicitors, in January, 1988 having practiced for eleven years in the field of planning and development law. Mr. Lord's practice extends from prosecutions to core area development assemblies, from drafting comprehensive implementing documentation to tribunal and court determinations. He is counsel to a number of municipalities on issues of development, public real estate dispositions, development charges, restructuring and landfill. Private sector clients include commercial and residential applications, housing initiatives and expropriation matters. Mr. Lord is an editor of the Ontario Municipal Board Reports and is Secretary of Lambda Alpha International (lai.org is an honorary land economics society) and is on the board of the Simcoe Chapter. He is a senior instructor at Ryerson University’s School of Urban and Regional planning, teaching in the areas of Land Use Law/Planning Law/Municipal Law. Mr. Lord’s term on the Trent Board of Governors is for three years, beginning July 1, 2012.


Chris Metcalfe
Director, Institute for Watershed Science, and Chair, Environmental and Resource Studies Program

Member, Trent University Senate

Dr. Metcalfe has been a Professor at Trent University for over 25 years, and he has a wide range of experience in determining the environmental fate and effects of environmental contaminants. Dr. Metcalfe's ongoing research has generated considerable attention both nationally and internationally. Dr. Metcalfe also has extensive experience in water quality issues in countries with emerging and developing economies, including Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba, Indonesia and Uganda. Dr. Metcalfe has held a variety of administrative positions at Trent, including Dean of Research and Graduate Studies (2000-2004).  Since July, 2006, Dr. Metcalfe has been the Director of the Institute for Watershed Science at Trent. This multi-disciplinary research centre is involved in research and training on watershed management. Beginning in 2010, Dr. Metcalfe was appointed as a “Senior Research Fellow” with the UN University Institute for Water Environment and Health in Hamilton, ON, Canada, where he has a leadership role in directing international projects.


Thomas Miller
Emergency Physician, Peterborough Regional Health Centre
Adjunct, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Queen’s University
Member, Trent University Board of Governors

Thomas attended Trent University between 1982 and 1986. In addition to completing his Honours degree in Chemistry, he was a varsity rower for three years, a Junior Senator and President of Peter Robinson College Cabinet. His interest in science and social responsibility led him to co-found the first chapter of Trent Student Pugwash. After Trent he studied for a M.Sc. at the University of Manchester and then returned to Canada to work as a Health Policy Analyst for Health Canada. He studied medicine at McMaster University between 1988 and 1991, and completed his Family Medicine residency at McMaster in 1993. During that time he became a member of the research team for the “Health of Children in War Zones Project,” acting as the Principal Investigator for the Gaza Child Health Survey, conducted in 1996. He returned to Peterborough in 1998 to work as an emergency physician at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC). From 2002­ to 2011 he held the positions of Chief and/or Medical Director of Emergency Services at the PRHC. Also, he holds the position of Assistant Professor, Adjunct, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Queen’s University. In 2009-10 he was Co-Chair of the Trent Athletics fundraising committee for the new Carol Love Rowing/Paddling Tank. In 2011, he completed his term as Chair of the Arts, Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee for the City of Peterborough. Thomas looks forward to becoming a Board member as Trent approaches its 50th anniversary; his three year appointment to the Board of Governors began on July 1, 2012.


Rosalind Morrow
Partner, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP
Member, Trent University Board of Governors, and Chair, Nominating & Governance Committee

Rosalind Morrow is a Partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (Toronto office) specializing in corporate and securities law, with an emphasis on financial services, communications and mining sector financings and mergers and acquisitions since 1990. Rosalind was called to the Ontario Bar in 1984 following her LLB completion at the University of Toronto in 1982. Rosalind’s recent and current volunteer involvements include membership on the Securities Advisory Committee to the Ontario Securities Commission, the Corporate Cabinet Committee, Conservation Foundation of Greater Toronto and the International Women’s Forum (Canadian Chapter) as well as Directorship of the Conservation Foundation of Greater Toronto and the VIVA! Youth Singers of Toronto. Rosalind has been appointed to the Trent University Board of Governors for the term July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2014.


Robin Quantick
Founder, Excalibur Learning Resource Centre Canada
Member, Trent University Board of Governors

Robin Quantick is the founder of Excalibur Learning Resource Centre Canada Corp. Incorporated in 1989, Excalibur has worked in a variety of human resource, policy development, mediation and strategic planning endeavours. It is best known for its work in the field of correctional/prison education. Robin is a graduate of the Trent/Queen's Concurrent Education program earning a B.A. (1981) and B.Ed. (1982). In 2007 Mr. Quantick completed an M.Ed. at Queen's University and commenced studies in the Trent University Indigenous Studies PhD program. Over the past 25 years Mr. Quantick has served on a number of local and international boards of directors. Currently Mr. Quantick serves as a Director of Omwaana Ono International, a registered Canadian Charity created to facilitate the building of a school for girls in Nabitendi Uganda. Robin's initial appointment to the Board of Governors began on July 1, 2011 for two years in the designated alumni seat. On July 1, 2013 Robin was appointed to the Board for a three year term as an external member.


Amber Vance
Undergraduate student
Member, Trent University Board of Governors

Ms. Amber Vance is a fourth year Trent student in the Bachelor of Education program, majoring in Indigenous Studies. She has served on the Champlain College Cabinet for the past three years sitting on Senate and as the Vice President and most recently has been elected the President of Champlain College Cabinet for the upcoming 2013-14 academic year. Additionally, Ms. Vance was a member of Senate Executive and the University Honours committee in 2011-12. Amber's appointment to the Board of Governors began July 1, 2012 for two years.


Kaitlyn Watson
Graduate student
Member, Trent University Senate

Kaitlyn Watson has an Honours degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in English and Geography from Lakehead University, in addition to a BEd in the Intermediate/Senior stream. Working in First Nation communities since 2011, Kaitlyn has developed a deep respect for the Traditional Knowledge housed within these communities. Her current research focuses on education policy while her wider research interests include the current relationships between settler society and Turtle Island’s First People. Kaitlyn’s appointment to Senate commenced July 1, 2013. She also sits on the Senate Executive Committee and the Graduate Studies Committee.


Anne Wright
Chartered Accountant
Chair, Trent University Board of Governors

A Chartered Accountant, Ms. Wright is an experienced board member with fund raising and government relations expertise. As a volunteer, she served as National President of the Canadian Diabetes Association and as a director of Belmont House and chaired Belmont's $10 million capital campaign. In her association with the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, she was on the Board and chaired the Institute's Foundation board. Resident in Port Perry, she chaired the board of Lakeridge Health in Durham Region. Ms. Wright previously served on the boards of Durham Hospice and the Auxiliary to Lakeridge Health Port Perry and previously served on the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Anne originally joined the Trent University Board of Governors in July 2007. She was Chair of the Board’s Advancement Committee from 2008 to 2010, Chair of the Board’s Executive Committee from 2009 to 2010 and her term as Board Chair extends July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2014.
